Player's Choice Vote Gets 'GOTY' Trending on Twitter Ahead of The Game Awards
The video game equivalent to The Oscars, The Game Awards, is coming up this week. It includes a fan voted award for Game of the Year, which also has an award decided by game industry professionals. Today the final five nominees were announced, and it has sparked so much discussion on Twitter that “GOTY” is trending, along with some of the nominees.
The Game Awards will be taking place on Thursday and is bringing some serious star power with it. Not only will industry stars like former head of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime and current head of Xbox Phil Spencer make an appearance, but so will Hollywood gamers like Captain Marvel star Brie Larson and fellow Avenger and Spider-Man actor Tom Holland. But perhaps most excitingly, the show will feature giant reveals from games like the never-before-seen Dragon Age 4, and even announcements of brand new games.
While there will be a great deal of pageantry, the point of the show is the awards, which includes a fan-voted award for Game of the Year. After several rounds of voting, the final five nominees are, in order of most to least votes: The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Hades, Doom Eternal, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The fans voting have now taken to Twitter to express their opinions.
The Last of Us Part 2 is winning but it is hotly contested because while it is incredibly popular, there was a large number of people who did not like the direction the game took with respect to its characters. The reactions were so visceral that it led to some people sending death threats to voice actress Laura Bailey over her character Abby’s part in the story.
In a close second place at the time of this writing is Ghost of Tsushima, which is one of one of Sony’s most successful new IPs. Many on Twitter are sharing their love for the story of protagonist Jin Sakai and the beautiful art direction of the game. While it seems like the winner will likely be one of the leading two Sony first party titles, many are still tweeting out their support for games like the indie darling Hades and Sony’s third first-party game to be nominated this year, Miles Morales.
The final winner of the fan-voted Game of the Year award won’t be officially announced until the show on Thursday. Before that however, gaming personality Syndee Goodman will be hosting a pre-show on Twitch and YouTube starting at 6:30 PM ET / 3:30 PM PT, that will include 5 gaming world-premieres that are in addition to the promised massive reveals in the show proper.
The Game Awards 2020 will air on December 10 at 4:00 p.m. PT.
