Playing as Sephiroth Turns Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Classic Mode Into a Boss Rush
In one of the game's biggest character reveals yet, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate announced Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 as its next DLC fighter last week at The Game Awards. Adding one of the most iconic video game villains of all time to the game's all-star roster has cemented Final Fantasy 7's representation in Smash.
As has become customary with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC fighters, the game's director, Masahiro Sakurai, spent some time today showcasing Sephiroth, showing off the character's moves, accompanying music tracks, and a new stage. While Sakurai typically opts to showcase DLC fighters by using them against different CPU opponents, he decided to show off Sephiroth in the game's Classic Mode this time, which gets a special twist when playing as the new character.
Near the end of the presentation, Sakurai revealed that playing as Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Classic Mode allows players to play through a sort of boss rush. The game director mentioned that the reason for this special twist in the game mode is because Sephiroth himself is like a boss character, so it seemed fitting to pit him against other mighty bosses from a wide range of video games.
While playing through Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Classic Mode as Sephiroth, Sakurai showed that players will have to take down a variety of the game's boss characters, such as Rathalos from Monster Hunter and Dracula from Castlevania. Displaying his own skill, the director managed to breeze through this special boss rush on the game mode's hardest difficulty setting, all while showing off all of Sephiroth's flashy new moves. Although Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still doesn't have a true boss rush mode like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, this unique twist on Classic Mode feels like one step closer.
Sakurai seems intent on establishing Sephiroth as a powerful villain in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which was even seen in the character's initial reveal trailer, which showed Sephiroth destroying the game's World of Light villain, Galeem, with a single strike. While Sephiroth comes with his own special gimmicks like many of the game's DLC fighters before him, pitting the iconic villain against other boss characters seems like a great way to show off the boss of all bosses.
Despite Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already including a variety of sword-wielding fighters, fans have remained excited for the new DLC character. It will be interesting to see where players end up placing Sephiroth on their competitive tier lists when he releases later this month.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Switch.
