Pokemon GO Reveals 2020 Holiday Event Avatar Items, Costume Pokemon
As Niantic's AR mobile game Pokemon GO has evolved since hitting the scene in 2016, it has made a point of releasing special content for players around major events and holidays. Costumed variants of Gengar and Sableye were released for Halloween this year, for example, and today Niantic announced the winter apparel that can be seen on both trainers and Pokemon come the Pokemon GO Holidays 2020 event.
The 2020 holiday celebration will begin December 22 at 8:00 a.m. local time and last through December 31 at 10:00 p.m., according to Niantic's announcement post. As with most major events in the mobile game, Pokemon GO will see an influx of new monsters in the wild and hatching from eggs, as well as event-exclusive Field Research, Raids, Item Boxes, and bonuses to accumulate.
However, many players will likely be interested in getting their hands on limited-time cosmetics and unique Pokemon, which is a draw in many mobile games such as DeNA's Pokemon Masters - particularly those titles in the gacha genre. Four avatar items will be available in the shop for this event: a Greedent Sweater, Whimsicott Earmuffs, Winter Boots, and a Winter Coat. Meanwhile, players can find and catch variants of Pikachu, Delibird, and Cubchoo wearing holiday costumes.
The costumed Delibird and Cubchoo are given the simple addition of festive bows based on a promotional image released by Niantic to advertise the event. However, Pikachu has numerous costumes from Pokemon GO anniversaries and other events in the past, so the 2020 Holidays Pikachu is more decked out with a fluffy winter coat, red-and-green scarf, as well as a fancy top hat.
Another unique version of Pikachu, dubbed Explorer Pikachu by Niantic, is available now through December 21 at 10:00 p.m. local time as part of a Pokemon GO crossover event with Pokemon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle. Players can also encounter Jessie and James from the Pokemon anime's Team Rocket as well as Shiny Celebi through this crossover, which potentially gives players a lot to do before the end of the year in conjunction with the 2020 Holidays event.
Active Pokemon GO fans were also able to take part in a special event featuring Wooper during The Game Awards 2020 last week, and on Friday another Special Research event will begin centered around the Ice and Psychic-type Galarian Mr. Mime. Those who have kept up with the mobile game to make sure they can catch 'em all will be busy for the rest of the month, but hopefully the opportunity to wear Whimsicott Earmuffs in-game will make the extra effort worthwhile.
Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS.
