Resident Evil 4 Director Shinji Mikami Has Not Been Contacted By Capcom About Remake
A remake of Resident Evil 4 has been rumored to be in development for some time now. Given the recent surge of classic Resident Evil remakes, Resident Evil 4 seems to be the most logical next step. However, that next step could potentially be taken without the assistance of one key figure that made the original Resident Evil 4 resonate with so many people.
For many fans of the series, Resident Evil 4 is a very important game. It is arguably the entry that instilled modernity into the Resident Evil series. The game did away with tank controls, and instead of alternating between camera angles there was one fixed camera perspective behind the player. It was also the first mainline installment in the series to occur outside of Raccoon City.
Shinji Mikami is not only the director of the original Resident Evil 4, but was also the game director behind the very first Resident Evil. Since that time, Mikami has served as a prominent figure in most the mainline Resident Evil games, but according to Mikami in a recent interview with Variety, he has not been contacted in any way with regards to a remake of Resident Evil 4.
In all fairness, it's impossible to know where Capcom is at in terms of the development process, so it's possible that the studio could reach out to Mikami in the future. However, Mikami has work at his own studio, Tango Gameworks, to contend with as well. It would be interesting to see what kind of impact he could have on the remake considering that he played a key role in making the fourth installment what it is.
Then again, considering the extremely quick turnaround of the Resident Evil 3 remake, releasing a little over a year after the launch of the Resident Evil 2 remake, it's possible that Capcom won't reach out to Mikami, which may not be a bad thing. Mikami mentioned in the interview with Variety how impressed he was with how well Capcom is handling the remakes of its classic games.
In any case, it will be interesting to see how the Resident Evil 4 remake turns out. If the previous remakes are any indication, it's possible that Capcom will alter the story of Resident Evil 4 in some way considering the amount of missing content there is in Resident Evil 2. Though, some narrative changes could help the remake stand out against the original game, considering the amount of love and popularity it received.
Resident Evil 4 is allegedly in development.
