Star Wars Galaxies Legends Sees Massive Turnout for Carrie Fisher Tribute

Star Wars is one of the many franchises that has crossed all borders of entertainment. With a wide range of products such as the movie trilogies, top-selling video games, action figures, and more, the well-loved characters, and their actors, have made their marks in any Star Wars fan's life. This is why players of community-created server Star Wars Galaxies: Legends have all come together online to celebrate and pay tribute to the series' most beloved princess.

Developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by Lucas Arts, Star Wars Galaxies was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that was first launched in 2003. After eight years live, the developers shut down the game's servers in 2011. This was to make way for the franchise's newest MMO at the time, Star Wars: The Old Republic. However, players who enjoyed Star Wars Galaxies have still found ways to play the older game through community-made rogue servers such as that of Star Wars Galaxies: Legends.

In a recent community forums post, the development team of Star Wars Galaxies: Legends shared the details of its annual Carrie Fisher tribute event. Marking the fourth-year anniversary of her death on December 27, 2020, the team invited players to pay their respects to Princess Leia's actress. Aside from her character's father, Darth Vader, Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia is arguably one of the most iconic characters in the franchise. This explains the massive turnout of players which led to some server technical issues during the online event.

The tribute was hosted in Dee'ja Peak within the game's Naboo, famously known as the character's home planet. Featuring statues of Princess Leia and R2-D2 posed in their iconic scene from Star Wars: A New Hope, players were encouraged to interact with the memorial shrine with the game's /Bow2 command. Those who stayed in the memorial area for a certain amount of time were given a special in-game item to commemorate this year's event. And to keep the event clutter-free, the team implemented a no-combat rule in the area and recommended players to stow away their pets, droids, and vehicles to reduce factors for in-game lag.

Within the same community forums post, fans were also encouraged to share lessons they have learned or their most cherished memories of Carrie Fisher, whether or not they have personally met the actress. Several replies in the thread have commented just how important Princess Leia is as a character, enough to still be relevant in current Star Wars content. Fans can only hope that the Star Wars team will continue to recognize and utilize the importance of her influence within the fandom.

Star Wars Galaxies has discontinued subscription since 2011.
