WWE Announces Superstar Gaming Series | Game Rant
WWE is moving forward with its plans regarding professional wrestlers playing video games online, it seems. The wrestling promotion and media company announced plans to start the WWE Superstar Gaming Series (SGS) on December 29. The SGS will be a digital event featuring WWE wrestlers playing a variety of video games. It's unclear if it will be streamed on Twitch, YouTube, or Facebook, as for now it has only confirmed that WWE's SGS will be available on the WWE Network and social platforms.
The plan, as announced, is to hold two different events on December 29 as part of the SGS. The first event will be a Best of UpUpDownDown 2020 Marathon, streaming across WWE social platforms. UpUpDownDown is the video game and general nerd culture-focused YouTube channel of WWE wrestler Xavier Woods. Woods' future with the WWE is in an unclear space, as he's now confirmed to be taking up a job with the recently resurrected G4 gaming channel.
The second event, and the bigger part of the SGS, will involve WWE wrestlers playing two different games. First will be the "Holiday Sus-Fest," which involves WWE players taking part in a few rounds of Among Us. The second game to be played is WWE 2K Battlegrounds in what WWE is calling the "Holiday Throwdown." It's unclear how much time will be spent on each game.
So far, seven different WWE wrestlers are confirmed for the event, as well as four streaming personalities. Ronda Rousey, The Miz, Liv Morgan, Adam Cole, Tyler Breeze, Shayna Baszler, and Jessamyn Duke will make up the WWE wrestlers involved in the event, while FaZe Adapt, Nick Eh 30, Lele Pons, and Wale make up the content creator side. Finally, the event will feature two hosts: Greg Miller of Kinda Funny Games will be the main host, alongside special guest co-host Xavier Woods.
The announcement of the WWE SGS revitalizes the controversy of the WWE seeking to shut down and co-opt its wrestlers' Twitch accounts over the past several months. While it isn't made clear in the announcement, "WWE social platforms" could imply each of these wrestlers' Twitch accounts. It'll be a clear indication as to whether the WWE now claims ownership of the Twitch accounts of wrestlers who also stream, including Adam Cole and Shayna Baszler.
Regardless of the controversy, WWE's show will go on. Viewers can tune in to WWE social platforms at 3:00 p.m. ET for the Best of UpUpDownDown Marathon, or at 8:00 p.m. ET for the WWE Superstar Gaming Series debut with Among Us and WWE 2K Battlegrounds.
