Assassin's Creed Odyssey Bionic Arm Revealed by Limbitless Solutions
While they may still seem like something out of science-fiction to some, prosthetic limbs have been gradually refined for years, becoming more widely available to those who need them. With this increase in availability has also come an increase in customizability, allowing people – especially children – to have them on display more comfortably. Limbitless Solutions, which specializes in prosthetics, uses interchangeable sleeves that can change a limb's look, with a new one being based on Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
Called the "Bracers of the Underworld," the sleeve is directly inspired by Assassin's Creed Odyssey's Kassandra. Aesthetically, the sleeve boasts a dark, armored design with fire-colored accents, meant to be evocative of Kassandra's battle with Hades in the Underworld. Limbitless cites Kassandra's status as an elite warrior with strength and resilience as one of the reasons for pursuing the design, with the hopes that it will inspire the children that wear it. The sleeve fits over the existing bionic arms, which are 3D printed. The customizability of the bionic arm is a key focus for Limbitless Solutions, and the organization has launched similar designs in the past.
One recent design is modeled after Cyberpunk 2077's Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves. That sleeve is an almost-identical replica of Silverhand's prosthetic limb featured in the game, though there are many others featured on Limbitless' social media accounts and website. Limbitless has deep connections to the video game industry, and not just for its customizable sleeves. In addition, the organization offers accessibility training video games, as well as other products meant to help people with disabilities.
Speaking on the Assassin's Creed Odyssey design, Ubisoft Senior Director of Business Development Arisa Lagunzad stated, “This is an amazing partnership with Limbitless and we are both impressed and inspired by the level of detail and quality of the bionic arms based on Kassandra from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey." Lagunzad's statement continues, "It made perfect sense to bring such a beloved, strong and respected character within the Assassin’s Creed universe to the project and we look forward to welcoming them into the family." Considering Lagunzad's response, future designs inspired by Ubisoft's franchises don't seem out of the question.
Limbitless Solutions is a non-profit organization originally founded in 2014 by UCF students. Currently, Limbitless' bionic arms are in clinical trials, though the organization has been seen as a great boon for prosthetics, in large part due to the organization's efforts to lower the cost of them, as children tend to outgrow prosthetics quickly. Accessibility has become an increasingly important topic in the video game industry, as well, with more developers implementing options that allow broader audiences to play. Limbitless' prosthetics are an important step to achieve a similar goal, and that will, hopefully, equate to other partnerships with game developers in the future.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
