Bungie Confirms Investigation of 3-Peeking in Destiny 2
In 2014, Bungie launched its new IP, Destiny. What the Washington-based developer was able to produce turned into one of the most popular titles of the 2010s. It took Halo's shooting mechanics, added in PvE and PvP activities, and culminated with a looter-shooter focus. When millions were playing World of Warcraft, console gamers turned to the Destiny franchise for a new MMO fix.
Destiny 2, Bungie's second installment of the series, is far from perfect as it enters its second season in the Beyond Light expansion. Members of the PvP community remained critical of its reported ignorance towards advancements in Crucible. Bungie moved one step forward by answering those critiques.
Beginning with the release of Destiny 2, updates and improvements to the game were mostly PvE-centric. Between adding new raids, dungeons, and secret missions, PvE earns most of the attention of Bungie. A competitive playlist was added, as well as a new iteration of Trials of Osiris that was removed in a future update.
Neither of those was well-received by the community. Gambit is a blend of PvE and PvP, it favors killing enemies and a final boss in order to finish the round. Even the original Trials of Osiris returned, but fell flat only a few months later. With Season 13 approaching and a new This Week at Bungie released, Crucible players were hoping for answers. Despite no additions to PvP in the weekly blog, Bungie took to Twitter to address a well-known complaint in the community.
Cozmo, lead community manager at Bungie, announced on Twitter Friday evening that Destiny 2 developers will look into "3-Peeking." That is the method used by players in Crucible modes to see around corners at an angle, since it takes the guardian into a third-person mode. Cozmo mentioned that Bungie is not promising any fixes overnight, or even in the future.
Swords are not the only option to get a player into a third-person setting. Certain emotes also do the same thing. Coupled with hacking in the PvP end-game activity, it's hard to envision a day where Trails of Osiris returns to its past glory. Immediate feedback was given to Cozmo on Twitter, mainly positive from the hardcore PvP community. Content creators such as nKuch, Holtzmann, and Luckyy10P acknowledged the answer from the Destiny 2 development team and were offering suggestions and praising Bungie for even talking about 3-peeking.
Game development is no easy task, and making one minuscule change could have lasting effects on the product, therefore it will take time to develop a fix, if there is one at all. Season 13 is set to debut on February 9 with another sandbox update, new Trials of Osiris armor, and recoil changes as Destiny 2 prepares for cross-play.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
