CD Projekt Red Bans Johnny Silverhand Romance Mod | Game Rant
Following a Cyberpunk 2077 mod that allows V to have sex with Johnny Silverhand garnering fan attention online, CD Projekt Red permanently disabled it saying the mod might be harmful to Keanu Reeves.
It's not surprising to see a mod like this surface online for a widely popular open-world game. Skyrim has an entire community dedicated to making mods, and some modders even make a lot of money through donations to make naughtier ones. When it comes to Cyberpunk 2077, some fans were disappointed that there weren't more opportunities for wild nights, other than a couple of JoyToys around Night City, such as the ability to drink and party all night long as suggested in the E3 2018 demo.
It's inevitable to see mods like the one from modder Catmino on Nexus Mods that allows players to sleep with Johnny Silverhand, similar to an Adam Smasher romance mod that released recently. The mod isn't perfect; switching the character's skins doesn't apply to their voices so Johnny will still speak with the JoyToy's voice when inviting V out for the night. Also, Johnny is still clothed during the cutscene, seemingly because Johnny's character model doesn't exist without clothing.
Still, that didn't stop PC gamers from enjoying the mod, if only for a moment of hilarity until CD Projekt Red stepped in. This morning, the mod was banned by the development studio, and links to it on Nexus Mods have been taken down. PC Gamer reached out to CDPR to ask why the mod was removed, to which it responded that portraying actors in a way that they weren't intending, such as inserting them into sexual scenarios, can be detrimental to the performer.
"Our most important rule regarding user-generated content, game mods in particular, is that it can't be harmful towards others," CD Projekt Red said in its statement. "In the case of model swaps, especially those that involve explicit situations, it can be perceived as such by the people who lent us their appearance for the purpose of creating characters in Cyberpunk 2077."
Even though Johnny Silverhand is clothed during the scene, CDPR is also concerned about the involvement of other performers as well, because the mod can change virtually any character's skin texture. It's disrespectful to those who haven't consented to their characters, especially those modeled after their real faces such as Hideo Kojima or CohhCarnage.
CDPR continues, "Therefore, when making fan content, creators have to make sure they've got permission from all the concerned parties," and goes on to say that any characters that have been solely invented for Cyberpunk 2077 can be tweaked with mods for player enjoyment.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions in development.
