Diablo 2 Remake in the Works from Vicarious Visions | Game Rant

The Diablo franchise has been around for decades, with the series being among the most highly regarded that Blizzard has ever made. While it hasn't been immune to controversies, specifically Diablo 3's launch woes and Diablo Immortal's announcement, there are many gamers with fond memories of the Diablo games. Luckily for them, one of the most well-received entries, Diablo 2, might be making a comeback.

According to a report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, a Diablo 2 remake is in the works from Vicarious Visions, the developer of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2Or at least, the remake is coming from the developers previously known as Vicarious Visions, as earlier today, Activision announced that the studio was being merged into Blizzard Entertainment and would no longer be the lead developer on projects.

That aside, however, Schreier stated that the developer has been working on Blizzard projects "for months now," but went on to state that this was yet another way of Activision chipping away at Blizzard's autonomy. In the report itself, Schreier says that Vicarious Visions has been working on Blizzard projects since last year, including a Diablo 2 remake according to people familiar with the project.

Apparently, the Diablo 2 remake was originally set to be developed by Blizzard's Team 1, which was behind the poorly received Warcraft 3: ReforgedHowever, the team was ultimately pulled from the Diablo 2 remake, and Team 3, which is behind Diablo 4, was put in charge. Vicarious Visions is now working with that team to bring the remake to life, according to Schreier. Apparently, the Diablo 2 remake is known as Diablo 2: Resurrected.

Schreier is notoriously accurate when it comes to leaking credible information about in-development games, and a Diablo 2 remake has been rumored for some time. It's possible that Blizzard is waiting to officially announce the project at its upcoming Blizzcon event, which is being held digitally due to the coronavirus pandemic. It does, however, sound like the game is still in the early stages of development, so it's possible that fans don't hear anything else for some time.

Vicarious Visions has produced several well-received remakes in the past, so Activision moving the team to work on Diablo 2, and future Blizzard projects, does make sense in that regard. However, many fans have been disappointed by Vicarious Visions being absorbed into Blizzard, specifically due to how well its remakes have performed. A Diablo 2 remake is certainly a good way to win over fans, though, and that's especially helpful considering how tumultuous the franchise's past few years have been.

Diablo 2 remake is reportedly in development at Blizzard.
