Fortnite is Adding an Icon Skin for TheGrefg | Game Rant
Epic Games owes much of its battle royale Fortnite's success to a dedicated community of content creators who bring attention to every new Season's mechanics and challenges for legions of fans. The Fortnite "Icon Series" has given creators such as Loserfruit time in the spotlight with in-game skins and other cosmetics, and David "TheGrefg" Canovas Martinez will apparently be the next player to receive his own skin.
Based out of Spain, Martinez has over 16 million subscribers on YouTube and nearly six million followers on Twitch as of this writing. He is also co-owner of the esports organization Team Heretics, which currently has teams for CS:GO and Fortnite according to its website.
Martinez announced his Fortnite skin will be revealed in a presentation on January 11, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. CEST via a Tweet Friday, and has since posted a number of videos to YouTube hyping up the reveal. Epic Games has yet to make any kind of announcement on its official channels, but given Fortnite Icon recipient Lachlan got a unique event surrounding his arrival last November, it seems likely that TheGrefg's skin will see something similar.
While Fortnite has celebrated content creators who focus on the game specifically, it has also introduced content based on larger celebrities in the past. For example, Fortnite players have received skins based on performers such as Marshmello and Travis Scott after the two hosted in-game concerts, and the game recently introduced a new emote based on the Dua Lipa song "Don't Start Now."
At the same time, Epic Games has continuously introduced new content into the game through its seasons and Battle Pass system. Fortnite is currently in Chapter 2, Season 5: "Zero Point," which has included new skins based on various popular culture characters including Din Djarin from The Mandalorian, Kratos from God of War, and Master Chief from Halo. A recent datamine suggests Fortnite will soon change up the Colossal Coliseum added to the in-game map as a part of this season.
As the game continues to expand, its player community will no doubt gravitate toward various content creators. The Fortnite Icon Series is a nice way for Epic Games to give back to these creators, and it will be interesting to see who follows up TheGrefg in receiving specialized cosmetics. In the meantime, players will still be able to receive unique skins through other means, such as the addition of Green Arrow through the Fortnite Crew program.
Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
