How Overwatch 2 Can Get the Most Out of Reaper | Game Rant
Every character in Overwatch has their own stories associated with them with their history and abilities. These will all be expanded with the release of Overwatch 2, where players will be able to go through their stories through the eyes of the characters, and Reaper has more than enough potential to be one of the main focuses.
Reaper, real name Gabriel Reyes, is one of the main villains present in Overwatch and is certainly going to be a threat when it comes to Overwatch 2. His connection to various characters, however, opens up many possibilities for story telling, in-game levels, and character development.
Being one of the characters on the original Overwatch roster upon release, many fans are familiar with Reaper, how he works, and his place in the game's overall lore. He has additionally made multiple large appearances during in-game events such as a boss in Junkenstein's Revenge and being a playable character during the Retribution mode.
One of the biggest events in Overwatch's lore was never actually seen in-game or in comics; it is only spoken of by a few characters and described in their bios in-game. This would be the fight between Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes that would lead to both of their apparent deaths and the end of the original Overwatch organization. The event would also lead to Moira saving Reyes and turning him into his identity as Reaper and Morrison choosing to become a vigilante under the name of Soldier 76.
With how important this is to the game's lore, the fight between the two should be playable or at least shown in some capacity during Overwatch 2. With how close the two were before various other events in Overwatch's history occurred, it will be very important for fans to see just how intense this boiling point was to lead to what it did. Showing this fight will also shed details on the relationship between the two and benefit their character overall, also helping give context for those who play Overwatch 2 without either reading the Overwatch comics, the character bios, or played the original Overwatch.
Another part of Reaper's history with a lot of potential to be implemented into Overwatch 2 is his initial takedown of the Deadlock gang, which Jesse McCree was a part of as a teenager. He then took McCree under his wing when McCree was forced to join Blackwatch in order to avoid jail time for his crimes.
The initial takedown of Deadlock by Reyes can definitely be made into a part of Overwatch 2's gameplay with players fighting through members of the Deadlock gang before needing to take down young McCree. It will also give insight into Reyes before he spiraled into the crimes that led to him getting into the aforementioned fight with Morrison. After all, the most fans got of Reyes before being Reaper was during the Retribution event and in the official Overwatch Halloween comic.
This relationship between him and McCree also has a lot of potential to be explored in Overwatch 2's main place in time after Reyes had become Reaper. While it is known that Reaper is using the funds from Talon to hunt down and kill all of the former members of Overwatch, it is unknown if McCree is on that list. This means that there is a lot of potential for this mentor and mentee to confront each other during Overwatch 2's main story.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
