The two-part Sailor Moon Eternal movie is slated to release its first part on January 8, then February 11 in Japan. The latest short teaser video explores the doubts and fears the young Chibiusa feels compared to the elder Usagi/Sailor Moon. The person Chibiusa confides in is Pegasus/Helios.
Anime movies have been a box office boon in Japan despite the pandemic impacting entertainment production throughout the world. The Demon Slayer movie has smashed box office records in Japan and the recent Pokemon movie has slid into the No. 2 spot right behind it. The next big release coming is Sailor Moon Eternal in January and it will be intriguing to see whether other anime movies find as much success as Demon Slayer.
The latest video for Sailor Moon Eternal is one of many short videos this month. It started with a short featuring the Sailor Scouts aside from Sailor Moon then one showcasing the series power couple Mamarou and Usagi. There was even a separate teaser video highlighting the story beats of Sailor Moon Eternal, which is a well-known arc in Naoko Takeuchi’s manga.
The marketing for this movie has almost been a reminder that it even exists and yes it is definitely going to release. It’s an understandable approach considering COVID-19 delayed the fall release of this movie. Sailor Moon Eternal is a continuation of Sailor Moon Crystal, a reboot of the classic 90's anime, that first aired in 2014 and went three seasons.
The reboot stays true to the manga version by Takeuchi with Eternal bringing back Chiaki Kon, the director of season 3 of Sailor Moon Crystal. The character designer from the original Sailor Moon anime Kazuko Tadano was also involved in this project. Here’s to hoping that Sailor Moon Eternal does make it into theaters and finds a measure of success. It’s been 25 years since a Sailor Moon movie has been on the big screen in Japan and the time seems ripe for a revival.
