Samurai Shodown Confirms Xbox Series X Release Date With New Trailer
Few video game companies can claim the longevity, diverse offerings, and history that SNK Playmore has. Nearly 30 years after its original game's debut, the company's long-running fighting game, Samurai Shodown continues to see new releases to the joy of fans both old and new.
First debuting in 1993, Samurai Shodown has endured and persevered over countless decades, generations, and gaming platforms. The historical fantasy fighting game's latest offering will be joining the current generation of video game consoles, as SNK Playmore took to YouTube to share a trailer for the future of the franchise.
Unveiling nearly a minute and a half of footage, viewers were treated to not only to the visuals of the game itself, but an announcement about the release on the Xbox Series X and S platforms. Fans can expect to get the fully optimized version of the game on March 16, 2021, via the free smart delivery upgrade or a brand new purchase. SNK Playmore and Koch Media also revealed the game to be running at 120 FPS, as made evident by the in game footage captured within the trailer.
An intriguing and unique mix of Japanese history, fantastical elements, and several deep fighting system mechanics, Samurai Shodown owes its longevity in the video game industry to its ability to stand out from the crowd. The game holds on to its Japanese roots and setting tightly, even having most in-game text remain in the native language and accompanied with subtitles. A resurgence in fan interest in the franchise even led to a recent NeoGeo Collection release of previous entries.
SNK Playmore's Samurai Shodown holds the rare honor of being a video game franchise that is older than some of the gamers playing them. With a current console generation upgrade around the corner, it looks likely that fighting game fans have not seen the last of this unique and enduring series quite yet.
Both the physical and digital edition of Samurai Showdown will be available on Xbox Series X, March 16, 2021.
