Sky: Children of Light From Journey Developer Coming to Switch This Spring
It's not uncommon for game developers to reschedule or postpone the release of a game for various reasons. With the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many developers were directly affected, even though 2020 was a profitable year for many games. While thatgamecompany's Sky: Children of the Light was planned to release on the Nintendo Switch in summer 2020, it was delayed due to the pandemic. Thankfully, the developer has confirmed that the game will release on the Switch in the spring of this year.
Sky: Children of the Light (often shortened to Sky) was first released for iOS devices in July 2019, and then released for Android devices on April 7th, 2020. The game is a social adventure game developed by thatgamecompany as a follow up to its successful Journey. Players are able to fly around beautiful landscapes thanks to a special cape, which they can level up as they explore multiple different realms.
Originally, Sky was supposed to release on the Nintendo Switch in Summer 2020, but in August, thatgamecompany announced that Sky would be pushed back "by a few months" into 2021. Fans who were eagerly awaiting the opportunity to explore the skies on the Switch hoped the game would be releasing toward the start of the year. In the Season of Dreams update, thatgamecompany confirmed a Spring 2021 release for the Switch, but has yet to give a final date.
While a "spring" release can generally mean anything from early March to late May, an April release might be a good expectation, as it would be one year after the game released on Android devices. For the over 20 million who already play Sky on mobile devices, thatgamecompany also gave details about what to expect in the Season of Dreams expansion. In what is described as a heartful adventure, the Season of Dreams "weaves the tale of a young ice skater whose goal is to perform for the kingdom’s coliseum." Players have access to new areas, expressions, and other cosmetics.
Sky has benefitted from a dedicated fanbase, and with the number of awards the game has won, it will be a worthwhile addition to the Switch catalog. With more players comes more opportunities to make an impact in the real world, especially since Sky has already raised millions for charity.
Those who want to play Sky on the Switch will have to wait just a bit longer In the meantime, players can pass the time by playing the developer's other influential game, Journey, which is available on Steam.
Sky: Children of the Light is available now on iOS and Android devices, and will release on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2021.
