Super Bernie World Devs Announce New Platformer Kitsune Tails
Indie game studio Kitsune Games made headlines in early 2020 when it released platformer Super Bernie World. The game was made to support Senator Bernie Sanders in his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, and was immediately reminiscent of the classic Super Mario Bros. The studio returns to announce development on its next game, Kitsune Tails, made in partnership with MidBoss and Ratalaika Games.
Since its founding in 2013 by Emma "Eniko" Maassen and James Yarrow, Kitsune Games has made strides to be as inclusive as possible in its creation of games. While the studio enjoyed the spotlight after the release of Super Bernie World, it has also released games like the turn-based dungeon crawler MidBoss (not to be confused with MidBoss, the studio), and the puzzle game Ultra Hat Dimension.
Kitsune Games recently announced development on a new retro platformer called Kitsune Tails. The story follows a young half-human, half-kitsune named Yuzu as she goes on a journey to deliver her first message as a servant to the goddess Inari. Players will be able to explore multiple lands inspired by Japanese mythology, as well as different haunted houses. There is romance with a helpful sorceress, multiple power-ups, optional story quests, and even a secret ending.
One thing that makes this game so unique is the developers' specific desire to add a queer romance to the narrative. With a major focus on the game's queer narrative, Kitsune Tails has the potential to join the ranks of many other well-received LGBTQ+ indie games.
Kitsune Tails will release on the indie-focused storefront itch.io and Steam, just like Super Bernie World. This time, the devs will be getting help from Ratalaika Games to bring Kitsune Tails to PlayStation consoles. It's yet to be seen if the game will be released on Xbox consoles or the Nintendo Switch, but it may be possible if it is well-received.
Kitsune Tails will be released in Q1 2022 for PC, PS4, and PS5.
