Twitch DMCA Takes Down MF Doom Tribute Stream Hosted by Brainfeeder, Flying Lotus
As if there weren't enough tragic events to have taken place last year, 2020 had to get one last jab in. Sadly, iconic hip hop rapper MF Doom passed away earlier on October 31, 2020, but wasn't announced until December 31. And rumor has it, the Twitch tribute stream for the artist was taken down due to DMCA issues.
The stream was titled "The Villain's Farewell; Remembering MF Doom" and was hosted by Flying Lotus, a music producer that worked with MF Doom. This isn't the first case of Twitch DMCA controversies, as many other streamers this year have been hit with copyright strikes. However, this time the stream was created by MF Doom's very own record label, Brainfeeder.
Theoretically, there shouldn't have been an issue since the account was associated with the company that owned the music. Unfortunately, the stream was hit within minutes of it going live, and the Brainfeeder Twitch account was taken down as well. Currently, there has been no official reasoning by Twitch for handing down this sentencing. Due to this, many fans have taken to Twitter to let out their anger for this seemingly unfair takedown.
Some fans reacted in hatred towards Twitch, disgusted that the platform would be so insensitive to take down a memorial stream regardless of whether it was playing some music. Other Twitter users tried to reason with Twitch calmly and ask it to please fix the issue as soon as possible, assuming the mistake only happened because of an automatic algorithm.
Fellow music artist Kenneth Charles Blume III, also known as KennyBeats, was watching the remembrance broadcast live and bore witness to the event. On the memorial stream, his reaction was similar to that of fans everywhere, shocked that Twitch would copyright a tribute stream and was hesitant to believe it at first. There is no official statement yet from Twitch on how it will resolve the issue.
There is no factual evidence that it was an automated DMCA strike that was the sole cause of the tribute stream being taken down. However, since it happened so quickly and is similar to other events of Twitch streamers hit with copyright strikes, it seems like the most reasonable answer. Hopefully, Brainfeeder and Flying Lotus will find another way to commemorate MF Doom's contribution to the music industry for fans to appreciate. Another memorial stream has been posted on Flying Lotus' Twitter account and a new Twitch channel called "Timeboy," but it is unclear if it will receive the same treatment.
