Animal Crossing: New Horizons Details Hello Kitty Crossover

Animal Crossing: New Horizons updates have been steadily introduced since the game's launch almost a year ago. Most of those updates add in new seasonal events, but the new update, coming in March, will add compatibility with a re-release of Animal Crossing amiibo cards on March 26.

These amiibo are collaborations with the Japanese company Sanrio who is perhaps best known for being the owners of the Hello Kitty brand. While the amiibo card pack contains 6 cards, Hello Kitty is indeed one of the brands represented. No price for the card pack was given, but it was confirmed that the pack would be sold exclusively at Target retailers. The good news with there being only 6 cards, however, is that each pack will have all 6 cards, so no hunting down specific villagers on secondhand sites will be necessary if one is able to snag a pack at Target before stock runs out.

Each card, like all the other Animal Crossing amiibo, features a villager that can be invited to the island. Each villager this time is brand new to New Horizons though and is representative of a Sanrio brand. The 6 brands represented are: Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Little Twin Stars, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Keroppi.

Each of the villagers also come with some new unique furniture, and in the trailer we can see the player character changing into different outfits representative of the different brands. How players acquire these new items, was not revealed in the trailer, but it would not be far fetched to assume they can be ordered from the online catalog the way other promotional and seasonal Animal Crossing items are ordered.

As for the new villagers themselves, one might think that a cat would be representing the Hello Kitty amiibo, a frog would be representing the Keroppi amiibo, and so on, but that is not the case. Rilla the gorilla will be representing Hello Kitty, Marty the bear cub will be representing Pompompurin, Etoile the sheep representing Little Twin Stars, Chai the elephant will be representing Cinnamoroll, Chelsea the goat will be representing My Melody, and finally, Toby the rabbit will be representing Keroppi.

It is worth noting that Sanrio content did actually exist in New Horizons before this upcoming update to the game. There were several posters available to the player to purchase from Nook's catalog much the same way one would go about purchasing a poster of any special Animal Crossing NPC or villager. Unfortunately, the cards had been out of print for quite some time until this upcoming re-release so the posters were hard to come by. Players initially could pick up the posters from someone who already owned them and then order them from the catalog later, but that was eventually patched out by Nintendo, perhaps because Nintendo knew re-releases of certain cards were coming.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
