Annapurna Interactive Game Neon White Lets Players Slay Demons in Heaven
Annapurna Interactive is a publisher known for picking up unusual indie titles in niche genres. The point-and-click adventure is one genre that Annapurna has focused on with titles like Kentucky Route Zero as well as the upcoming mystery thriller Open Roads. In today's Nintendo Direct, the publisher revealed a new first-person action title called Neon White.
The new title comes from the creator of 2018's Donut County, Ben Esposito. Donut County is quite a different game from what Neon White appears to be, with Donut County being a puzzle game in the vein of Katamari Damacy while Neon White is a high-flying first-person shooter featuring assassins from Hell doing Heaven's dirty work. Donut County charmed players with its cute aesthetics and simple, yet fun game mechanics. Neon White looks to be going for something completely different.
The game was revealed for Switch as part of the Nintendo Direct with a short trailer showing off some of the core mechanics found in Neon White. Instead of using traditional weapons, the method of attacking in Neon White focuses on "Soul Cards," which have the properties of a range of different firearms. Shown are a handgun card, submachine gun card, shotgun card, and a crossbow card, and these can be "sacrificed" to perform "Killer Moves."
The main character, the titular Neon White, appears to have some competition in Heaven. Other assassins are seen in the trailer, including one named Neon Violet who looks to be swooning over Neon White. The story sequences shown in the trailer look to provide players with a bit of a break from the high-paced action.
Annapurna Interactive had a healthy showing at the Nintendo Direct, also revealing their game Outer Wilds is on its way to Switch soon. Neon White has got a fair bit of style, and will take the fight to Heaven later this year.
Neon White will be available winter 2021 for PC and Switch.
