BioMutant Developer Compares Game to Breath of the Wild, Shadow of Mordor
Swedish game developer Experiment 101's open-world RPG title Biomutant was announced in August 2017, and since then excitement has risen for the game. Biomutant features many gameplay elements all sewn together in a giant open world revolving around mutant tribes and a corrupted tree of life.
While the gameplay reveals at Pax 2017 and at Gamescom 2018 gave fans looks at the deep combat system, surprising gameplay elements, and exploration of the massive world, new gameplay footage recently released alongside an interview with Biomutant creative director Stefan Ljungqvist that sheds more light on the highly anticipated title.
Ljungqvist explains that within the world of Biomutant, six different tribes exist and it is up to players to choose what tribe to align with. Ljungqvist compares relationships with the tribes to Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor, as players will conquer tribe outposts, earn favor with a tribe, and possibly become the leader of that tribe. The dynamic relationships of tribes will affect the player's genetic make-up, and Ljungqvist said, "Each [tribe] represents kind of a DNA string, so as a player, you're free to mutate or morph your own version of each of these DNA strands."
Players will not have to wait much longer to explore the massive world of Biomutant and create their own mammal-like mutant. On January 26, Experiment 101 revealed that Biomutant will release on May 25th, 2021.
Fans have already gotten a look at the creatures that make up the world of Biomutant, but Ljungqvist provides more details about how the dynamic creation of the character will shape physical appearances as well as stats and combat abilities. The RPG elements of Biomutant will allow players to choose a class at the beginning of the game that will shape how the character approaches combat. While Ljungqvist does not reveal how many classes will be available, he does talk about two classes: the "Psyfreak" class, which utilizes magic and mutant abilities, and the "Commando" class, which seems like it adds proficiencies in firearms and other weapons.
Ljungqvist compares the title to many different games, drawing art inspiration from the Ratchet and Clank series, comparing the gameplay to the open combat system of Devil May Cry, and even referencing the developers' love for Kung Fu Panda. While looking at gameplay, one can see elements of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, when asked about if any inspiration was drawn from the title, Ljungqvist said when Biomutant started development Breath of the Wild was not out yet, but that the colorful and vibrant world can be compared to recent Zelda games.
Biomutant launches May 25 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
