Destiny 2: 10 Things You Need to Know About the Exo Stranger
Exo Stranger was first introduced in Destiny 1 and remained a mystery up until now with Destiny 2: Beyond Light's release. During the Warmind expansion that centered around Ana Bray, players learned that the Exo Stranger was the Elsie Bray. A puzzle from Vicarious Visions and the Lost Memory Fragments on Mars revealed this key piece of information.
However, it wasn't until Beyond Light that players got a confirmation that she is indeed the granddaughter of the magnanimous scientist Clovis Bray. Dr. Elizabeth Bray was a scientist from the Golden Age who worked alongside her family and troubling consequences led her to this fate of becoming the Exo Stranger.
10 She Had To Become An Exo
During the Born in Darkness quest, Exo Stranger explained to the Guardian that Clovis Bray I, her grandfather, needed a "guinea pig" after Clovis Bray II, her father, died. She had a disease called the "Clovis Curse" that would eventually kill her and her only option was to become an Exo. Her Clovis Bray I convinced her to join him in his Exoscience research on Europa to save her and himself. She didn't trust him since he failed to save her father's Exo, but the Vex infestation in their research forced her to become an Exo.
9 Clovis Killed Elsie-1
She was Elsie-1 after she became an Exo, and had her memories uploaded. At some point, Clovis asked her if she experienced these mysterious, dark dreams that other Exos see. She asks Clovis, "the manufacturing process creates an unknown cognitive artifact you can’t solve. And you didn’t think to warn me?" Elsie-1 then vows to shut down the Exo production. Entry 15 in the Clovis Bray Logbook explains that he killed Elizabeth-1 to protect his legacy. He created Elsie-2 and lied to her about her death. Later, Elsie-2 discovered a memory bank of Elizabeth-1 when fighting a Vex invasion and learned the truth.
8 Not From This Timeline
She mentions throughout Beyond Light that in her original timeline, Eramis lived, Guardians abandoned the Light, and Darkness thrived. She needed a promising future to save humanity and to prevent a second Collapse. This is why she watched the Guardian get resurrected by the Ghost acquire a Jumpship in the Cosmodrome, which was the first mission in Destiny.
She was the first NPC, besides the Ghost, that players see in the game. Also in Beyond Light, she explained the reason she asked Guardians to destroy the Black Heart and that this timeline gives her hope.
7 Killed Ana Bray In The Dark Future
In the Born in Darkness quest, the Exo Stranger explains how she has kept Ana Bray searching for her past which made her obsessive. In the Exo Strangers' original timeline, she had to kill Ana because she used Darkness in cruel ways. Since the Exo Stranger is looping through time, she had to kill her own sister repeatedly. Eventually, Elsie explains this to Ana and hopes that this timeline doesn't end that same way.
6 Stuck In A Loop
In the Remanents of Darkness legendary quest, the Exo Stranger reveals that "I've lived in a loop for so long". The loop is also talked about in Chapter 9: The Return in The Dark Future lore book. She kills Ana Bray, Eris becomes unstoppable, and the Traveler shoots another burst of Light. That's the moment she gets looped back to when Cayde-6 had just become the Hunter Vanguard. She has been running through time over and over again to achieve a future different from her original timeline.
5 Met With Other NPCs, Vaguely
In Ghost Fragment: Rasputin 4, Rasputin sees someone and exclaims, "You stand here now and now and now many times", he adds "Do you step ACROSS is there a world of worlds, a web, and you a spider upon it. Are you searching for that one thread you need? Is that thread named victory?".
In Forsaken, Mara Sov mentions that she dreamt of a friend she will have and she would tell her that "A side should always be taken. Even if it's the wrong side." This is the exact thing the Exo Stranger told the Guardian in Destiny 1.
4 Worldline Zero
Dr. Elizabeth Bray was a renowned inventor, but the Worldline Zero sword was her most intriguing invention. The lore of this exotic sword shows someone with the username "elbray", Elsie Bray reading an email from "wibray", her sister Willa Bray. Her sister shows interest in the sword which makes Elsie remove all data regarding this sword. Lost Memory Fragments from Warmind, Elsie detailed her journey to create an Einstein-Rosen bridge for time-travel using Vex tech. Elsie also says that she may disappear and that she will hide this weapon she created in the Core Terminus, which is where she stored Worldline Zero. She leaves the last Fragment message for the Guardian to find since she has seen the future when constructing this sword.
3 No Time To Explain Rifle
No Time To Explain was a Pulse Rifle from Destiny 1 that the Exo Stranger gave to the Guardian. Grimoire card from Destiny 1 shows that different researchers found different sources of the gun based on various timelines. The Destiny 1 version of the gun had the word "Soon" etched on the side. In Beyond Light, the word says "Now" and refers to a single timeline analysis where the Golden Age rifle was enhanced in the future and sent back in time. Clovis enters a portal and sees Elsie dead while No Time To Explain is in her hands. He then gifted this rifle to Elsie when he returned from the future.
2 She Doesn't Have A Ghost
In a teaser for Beyond Light, the Exo Stranger was seen with a floating fish object by her side, similar to a Ghost. She was not forged in Light but she carries the same aesthetics as Guardians. She disappears like a Guardian would, similarly, Mara Sov does too. Either it is from another timeline, from the future, or a product of Darkness. The Any Other Sky exotic Sparrow from Beyond Light may hint at what it is. She explains that she needs new technology to help her when she restarts a loop. "When I wake up, I need something familiar to ground me. Something I can carry back with me. It could be small."
1 Who Was She Talking To At Ishtar Academy
In Destiny 1, players spoke with the Exo Stranger on Venus in the Ishtar Academy. While speaking to the Ghost and Guardian, she communicates with someone else. While speaking to that mysterious person, the Exo Stranger says, "Yes, I'm listening. They are here, with me." Bungie has not yet provided information on this iconic scene. Either players will learn who she was talking or perhaps it is a retcon.
