Overwatch Makes Weird Change to Volskaya Industries Map

Since its release all the way back in 2016, Blizzard's popular multiplayer shooter Overwatch has seen countless changes. The biggest of these are the maps, cosmetics, modes and heroes that have been added over the years in an attempt to keep things feeling fresh for casual and competitive players alike. Part of that also involves balancing, where characters are adjusted based on statistics and feedback to ensure a fair and balanced match as much as possible.

While Blizzard is fairly vocal about upcoming changes, even going as far as letting fans test out updates early on the PTR server, there are a few things that may get adjusted behind the scenes letting fans discover them for themselves. Some of these are intended to be fun little secrets such as the recently found World of Warcraft related Easter egg involving Bastion's bird friend Ganymede. However, some changes are more subtle in nature, like a recent modification to the Volskaya Industries map.

Over the years, many Overwatch players routinely break railings as they can potentially block damage accidentally, especially from high vantage points. Typically, they can be dealt with in a single melee hit, giving players the advantage they're looking for without any added trouble. However, fans have been discovering that a popular location near Point B on the Volskaya Industries map has seemingly received a subtle change that is causing players all sorts of trouble.

One popular Overwatch streamer, Brian St. Pierre, captured footage of the situation while also venting about the map change. The railing, which typically only needed one hit to break, now takes multiple hits. For characters like Widowmaker, which could grapple to different ledges and break the attach railing, now will fall to her doom due to the stronger than expected guard rail. While St. Pierre was clearly agitated, cursing the designer to step on a LEGO, other responses to his post indicated that the issue also extends to other maps like Chateau. Either way, this change is likely going to influence how Widowmaker players approach situations.

In addition to troublesome railings, the game is likely going to see a spike in activity thanks to a bevy of special events taking place in February. Last week, Overwatch kicked off its annual Lunar New Year event, celebrating the Year of the Ox. As expected, the event features a ton of new cosmetics and a a brawl mode called Bounty Hunter. In addition, Blizzard announced that it is offering special celebration packs for all of its games, Overwatch included, in honor of the company's 30th anniversary. Players can get all sorts of bonuses and digital content as well as pick up a replica version of Arthas Helm of Domination available on the BlizzardGear website.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
