Steam Reaches 50,000 Game Listings | Game Rant
Steam is a massive video game digital distribution service ran by Valve, and it keeps getting bigger. Just recently Steam broke its concurrent user record for the third month in a row, as millions use the platform to play video games. Part of the reason why the service may be so popular is because of all of the options. In fact, there are now over 50,ooo games to choose from on Steam in the US.
The library of Stream games is massive and varied. AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077 are on Steam, as are smaller indies like the newly released and well-received Little Nightmares 2. That vast catalog has added up and finally hit the 50,000 milestone
That astronomical number only includes games that are currently playable on Steam, as opposed to games that have been delisted. There are plenty of titles that have been taken down due to copyright issues, complaints from players, licensing agreements ending, and more.
Back in November, a calculation was made that it would cost about half a million dollars to purchase every game on Steam, Since then, plenty of new games have been made available on the platform, so it is likely that the new estimation would be much higher than even that. While it is unlikely that there is anyone out there willing to shell out that kind of cash, the options are what matters. Simply having that many games to choose from is great for gamers.
The 50,000 games to choose from in the U.S. on Steam is a far cry from China's public beta of Steam only having 53. In fact, with about 10,000 games having been added to Steam in the U.S in 2020, that 53 count is about the two-day average in the US. Hopefully, China's version of Steam can start producing many more video games soon, but it has a long way to go to ever catch up to the US, if it's ever able to at all, which seems unlikely given Chinese regulations.
50,000 video games is almost comical. The PS2 only ever nearly hit 2,000, and while digital-only games helped shape the last couple of generations. The Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo ecosystems all have around 2 or 3 thousand games each over the last generation or two. This 50,000 game mark on Steam absolutely towers over the rest. There are quite literally more games than anyone can count without the help of a computer, but the more options the better.
