Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is a Huge Success in the UK

The re-release of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has been the buzz of the Nintendo Switch since its launch a few days ago. Measuring the platformer's early success isn't easy, given it only just launched and Nintendo doesn't share much data. Luckily, sales info from the UK is more routine. Weekly sales data shows that physical boxed sales of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury climbed to number one already, and managed to do so in an impressive fashion.

GamesIndustry.biz head Christopher Dring shared early details about the UK's weekly sales information on social media. According to Dring's, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury isn't just the number one release in the UK this week, it also destroys the launch sales of the initial Super Mario 3D World on Wii U. Dring said the new release delivered almost three times the total unit sales of the Wii U game, though he admits those initial sales were only around 160,000.

Another detail added by Dring is how Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury compares to other Mario game launches on the Nintendo Switch. Despite its impressive numbers, at least in relation to other games at this moment, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is just the third-ranked Mario platformer to launch on Switch. First in sales is Super Mario Odyssey, with the second being the limited-availability release Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

It is somewhat surprising that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury didn't outsell the Super Mario 3D All-Stars release. It's a newer game package and features brand new content, after all. That said, it was released during a slower time of the year for the industry. Dring said 3D World came in about a third lower than Super Mario 3D All-Stars' sales total.

Nintendo fans still have plenty of time left to pick up Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Perhaps Nintendo Switch players are still making their way through the 3D All-Stars before picking up something new, so Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury sales could climb after 3D All-Stars' limited availability window ends.

Regardless, considering Super Mario 3D World is a relatively recent release and a Wii U game at that, Nintendo's likely happy with its sales performance so far. It's one of two new games to join the top 10 this week in the UK alongside Little Nightmares 2, and if its worldwide numbers mirror the UK numbers, Nintendo could consider doing Bowser's Fury-sized expansions more often.
