The Resident Evil Movie Has An Official Release Date | Game Rant

The upcoming Resident Evil movie now has an official release date. Announced in 2020 by Constantin Films and Sony Pictures, the movie aims to be true to Capcom’s classic survival horror games. At the time, writer-director Johannes Roberts promised an original adaptation keeping in mind the first two games in the series, with the storyline set in 1998 on a fateful night in the fictional town of Raccoon City.

Fans will get to see Kaya Scodelario of The Maze Runner fame play Claire Redfield, Robbie Amell from the TV series Upload as Chris Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen from Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp as Jill Valentine, and Avan Jogia from Zombieland: Double Tap as Leon S. Kennedy.

The reboot, which will diverge from the continuity of the previous Resident Evil movies, is set to be a more faithful adaptation of the overall story found in the games. Filming wrapped in December 2020, and the movie will premiere on September 3, 2021.

The Resident Evil game series was a major success since its first release in 1996. The story in the first installment famously has players exploring a mansion filled with puzzles and the undead. From there, the story only grew larger, with future games taking the story of the evil Umbrella Corporation and its deadly experiments even further.

In Resident Evil 2, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield take the reins in their journey to escape the zombie-infested Racoon City and potentially find survivors, including Claire’s brother Chris. All four characters, and others from the first two parts of the games, will be a major part of the reboot movie.

The previous series of Resident Evil movies did well at the box office and earned $1.2 billion worldwide. However, they did not stick to the expansive plots established in the games. Additionally, there wasn’t much continuity between the movies themselves, with many changes made to the plot lines throughout the series. The main character Alice, who was portrayed by Milla Jovovich, remained a constant factor throughout, and many villains and elements from the games made an appearance across the six adaptations.

Resident Evil will release in theaters on September 3, 2021.
