90s SHMUP Andro Dunos Sequel Announced | Game Rant
Andro Dunos isn't a name that most modern video game fans will recall. It was an SNK release from 1992, offering side-scrolling sci-fi SHMUP action. Reception at the time ranged from middling to positive, but Andro Dunos ultimately came to multiple platforms including the Dreamcast. Because of its lack of presence today, it is a surprise to see that Andro Dunos 2 is tentatively planned for release in 2021.
Andro Dunos 2 will be a side-scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game just like its predecessor. It will feature power-ups earned by killing enemies and otherwise "flexible and efficient" action. A short trailer for Andro Dunos 2 starts with the words "28 years later," and shows some gameplay. Enemies include giant spaceships, robotic shark submarines, and small enemy fighters that arc on-screen, shoot one bullet, and then fly off never to be seen again.
If Andro Dunos was going to be resurrected with a new sequel in 2021, it's fitting that it's being done by PixelHeart. PixelHeart began in 2010 as a publisher for Neo Geo MVS arcade games, but has since focused more heavily on Dreamcast titles. Previous releases include niche titles like Stazius Next, Wolflame, Zangeki Warp, Supercharged Robot Vulkaiser, and other SHMUPs.
It seems that PixelHeart has big plans for Andro Dunos 2. Those plans start with releasing the game on Dreamcast, as is PixelHeart's wheelhouse. That's just the start, as Andro Dunos 2 will also be coming to PS4 and Xbox One. Nintendo platforms won't be left out either, with both the 3DS and Switch supported. No PC support is planned right now, but that seems to be because PixelHeart prioritizes physical copies of its games.
Andro Dunos 2 releases in 2021 on 3DS, Dreamcast, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
