Marvel's Avengers MCU Skins Will Be a Premium Purchase, Dev Confirms

Marvel’s Avengers fans have a lot to look forward to this year, as developer Crystal Dynamics recently revealed several expansions and content updates that will arrive in the next few months. The soonest update is due to release this spring and will add MCU-themed cosmetics, content that fans have longed for since Marvel’s Avengers released last year.

The cosmetics will be added with the upcoming Red Room Take Over, Marvel’s Avengers first proper event. According to Square Enix, the event will overhaul the game’s HARM missions, a type of training mode that players unlock halfway through the campaign. It seems intended to promote the MCU’s upcoming Black Widow movie, which will release the around the same time that the event becomes available. The official Marvel’s Avengers Twitter account announced the event on March 26, adding that it would include “outfits inspired by the MCU.”

The Twitter account detailed how players will be able to attain the outfits today, when it replied to its March 26 tweet by clarifying that the MCU-inspired skins will be available exclusively in the Marketplace. Players will be able to purchase the skins with credits, Marvel’s Avengers’ in-game currency that can be purchased with real money. The skins will cost the equivalent of about $14.

Many fans believed that the Marvel’s Avengers announcement tweet implied that the skins could be earned by completing challenges in the event, and were disappointed to find out they would have to pay real money for the cosmetics. Making the MCU skins free seemed like a good way for Square Enix to make up for the disappointment some felt over in-game characters not looking like their MCU counterparts, though it is apparent that Square Enix sees the skins as an opportunity to make a few extra bucks.

Fortunately for fans, the Red Room update will be free to play. Besides adding new skins and revamping the HARM missions, the event will also introduce Yelena Belova, who becomes the second Black Widow in the Marvel comics. Animated calling card will be added as well, and will likely be unlocked by completing the event’s challenges.

Each hero has multiple outfits in the MCU movies, so it will be exciting to see which ones will be added to Marvel’s Avengers. It seems likely that Black Widow’s white outfit that has appeared in recent trailers for the Black Widow movie will make the cut, as the event ties into the MCU. Perhaps players will also get to see Hulk’s Bruce Banner appearance from Avengers: Infinity War, or Thor’s gladiator-inspired outfit from Thor: Ragnarok.

Marvel's Avengers is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
