Super Mario Maker Bookmark Website Shuts Down Early | Game Rant
The original Super Mario Maker is shutting down a bit sooner than anticipated. The Super Mario Maker Bookmark website was scheduled to close the same day Mario is to die (at least according to the internet), on March 31, 2021. But the website appears to be have been shut down a few days early.
The original Super Mario Maker will no longer be supported as of March 31. This means that players will no longer be able to upload new courses for the creator, as the game was already removed from the digital eShop back in January of this year. On top of that, the browser-based Bookmark site also was set to no longer be supported on that same March date. But something looks to have gone amiss, as demolition plans for the game may have been moved forward.
A quick browse to the Super Mario Maker Bookmark site results in a 503 error. It would be a surprise to see the site come back online now, considering the fact that it is scheduled to be shut down in just a few days. The full list of things that will no longer be supported for Super Mario Maker for Wii U includes the Bookmark website, the ability to upload courses, updating the ranking of liked courses, looking up bookmarked courses, and more.
To be clear, this is the Wii U title that will soon be no longer supported, not the very well-received Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch. The creative platforming level and game-making tool is one of the Switch's best-selling games to date, and that will likely continue.
The timing of Super Mario Maker being shut down is very intriguing, as it is a part of the long list of Mario games that are being delisted, shut down, and taken off of shelves on March 31. The 35th Anniversary of Super Mario ends on a sour note in that fantastic and beloved Mario games will soon be no more, or very hard to obtain.
On one extreme, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is already being scalped because it will soon be unavailable to purchase physically and digitally, meaning the only way to play the game will be to have already bought it before it was delisted. Meanwhile, a game like Super Mario Bros. 35 will soon be completely impossible to play, as it is being shut down altogether. While Super Mario Maker 2 is available to enjoy, it certainly feels odd that Super Mario Maker is a part of the March 31 Mario armageddon, and that the game will be mostly unplayable in just a few days.
Super Mario Maker is no longer available to purchase digitally on Wii U.
