The 10 Biggest PS5 Game File Sizes (& How Many GB They Take Up)
Within the early days of the Playstation 5, there has been a lot of talk about the variety of features it has and what it lacks. Notably, one of the biggest complaints coming out of the gate from Playstation fans is the lack of viable storage options provided to players thus far.
The system has about 825 gigabytes available on its SSD. Of course, this doesn't mean that players will have all 825 GB to use. Players will only have a maximum of 667 GB available to them and must buy a compatible NVMe SSD hard drive. This isn't possible for everyone, so it's important to look at the biggest file sizes for PS5 games to see what players should prioritize.
Update on March 24th, 2021, by Chris Birsner: The Playstation 5 library has grown considerably since its launch in November. Many major titles of since come to the next-generation console, making it even more important for players to manage their storage space. There are even a few more games that exceed 100 gigabytes, so it's important to know what new games need to have massive space considerations.
10 Borderlands 3 (49.64 GB)
A game that was brought over from the previous console generation, Borderlands 3 comes to the Playstation 5 with a free upgrade for anyone with the game on the Playstation 4. The first-person loot shooter also added support for split-screen local multiplayer for up to four players. In addition, Gearbox Software added more skill trees for the four main characters in the game. Various other plans are in the works for the future, but those looking to install the game now will need a minimum of 49.64 GB available.
9 Demon's Souls (52.09 GB)
One of the major Playstation 5 exclusive launch games, Demon's Souls is a remake of the classic FromSoftware game by Bluepoint Games released over a decade ago on the Playstation 3. With it comes enhanced graphics and intense combat sequences that take full advance what the Playstation 5 has to offer in terms of performance. The action role-playing game remains true to the original from a gameplay perspective, but the upgrades to the game have a major impact on the file size. The game requires users to have 52.09 GB available at a minimum.
8 Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (52.56 GB)
Likely the most hyped game going into the next-generation launch, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales from Insomniac Games is a spin-off of the 2018 hit Marvel's Spider-Man. Though it isn't as big as its predecessor, Miles Morales does take advantage of the PlayStation 5's graphical engine and includes the exciting gameplay that people enjoyed about the first game.
The minimum file size for Miles Morales alone is 52.56 GB. The ultimate edition, which includes a remaster of Marvel's Spider-Man, doubles the minimum requirement to around 105 GB.
7 FIFA 21 (55.53 GB)
Sports games have a tendency to be rather large considering the amount of player and team information that is required to make the game special. FIFA 21 is the next-gen entry of a series that is known to have hundreds of different teams across thirty different leagues along with a ton of players that people can play as in the game. The soccer game features its usual Ultimate Team package, as well as a career mode and the second iteration of the VOLTA Football 21 mode. The game requires 55.53 GB to download.
6 Rainbow Six Siege (55.83 GB)
Rainbow Six Siege is a game that has been around for six years that continues to be loved enough by its player base that it got a next-generation upgrade only a few weeks after the release of the new consoles. The tactical first-person shooter includes 20 different maps where players can play a variety of different modes as they take on the roles of different operators on a Rainbow team. The sheer amount of different content in the game has caused it to need 55.83 GB of storage upon its download.
5 Mortal Kombat 11 (84.21 GB)
The classic fighting game Mortal Kombat came out with its eleventh main installment in 2019. In 2020, the game has now reached the new generation by being released on the Playstation 5. Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition brings to the Playstation 5 all of the base game as well as all of the downloadable content to this point. This includes the Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath expansion that brought additional characters, stages, and a new story mode. Factoring in all the extra content added, the game's minimum requirement for downloading is 84.21 GB.
4 NBA 2K21 (96.56 GB)
The NBA 2K games are always rather large, so it's no surprise the game requires the second-most amount of space on the Playstation 5 as of now. NBA 2K21 was originally released back in September but was upgraded to the next-generation consoles on each system's respective launch date. Along with upgraded graphics, the game rebranded The Neighborhood career mode into The City, reintroducing affiliations into the game and having players create new players to level-up. NBA 2K21 requires users to keep 96.56 GB open in their allotted storage space.
3 Destiny 2 (101.1 GB)
Another entry that uses the "games as a service" model, Destiny 2 continues to get massive updates that have caused it to be one of the largest game files the Playstation 5 has. The game takes place in a sci-fi universe where players hang out in a shared world similar to MMOs.
The game also features different modes that can be divided into player-vs-environment and player-vs-player modes. The game requires 101.1 GB of storage, which seems like just the right amount to fit the game's ridiculous amount of weapons.
2 Hitman 3 (105.1 GB)
Agent 47 returned earlier this year and he's taking quite a bit of residence on players' Playstation 5 storage space. Hitman 3 is supposedly the final installment in the World Of Assassination trilogy, and IO Interactive made sure the series went out with a bang. The game features six maps with missions that give players the ability to complete their missions in whatever ways they can come up with. While players have the ability to download maps from the previous games, the data for the six maps alone require the player to have 105.1 GB on their drive.
1 Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (225.3 GB)
The least surprising entry to this list is the game that doubles what NBA 2K21 needs for storage space. Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War continues the trend from the last game in the series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, with ridiculously gigantic file sizes that will eat away at the Playstation 5's SSD. This is likely due to the number of game modes the installment has, as well as taking into account the game's upgraded graphics. The game currently clocks in at a whopping 225.3 GB minimum which may change as updates and fixes come from Activision.
