Earthbound-like RPG Oddventure Coming to PC and Switch Next Year
For years, Earthbound has been hailed as a fan-favorite RPG by many for its creativity, quirkiness, and overall experimental style. While its predecessor Mother, or Earthbound Beginnings, wasn't localized outside of Japan until 2015, fans still have yet to see Mother 3 come outside of Japan, and the game remains a hot topic in many circles - even appearing in the news for Mother 3's 15th anniversary this week. Soon Oddventure, a game inspired by the series, will be available on PC and Switch.
The Earthbound series has served as an inspiration for many, even spawning one of the most popular indie titles in recent years: Undertale. While former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime continues to tease fans about the localization of Mother 3, the upcoming Earthbound-inspired game by indie developer Infamous Rabbit looks like it could fill the void.
Oddventure is a turn-based RPG in the same vain as Mother 3 and Undertale, holding a quirky and seemingly light-hearted yet mysterious tone. The game was originally slated to release solely on PC, but has now been confirmed for a Nintendo Switch thanks to publisher Pineapple Works. While there is no set release date at the moment, the game is planned for release in Q3 2022.
A demo can be downloaded Steam and itch.io, while fans can follow Oddventure's Kickstarter to learn more about the development. The RPG will follow Charlie, a socially awkward teenage girl, who has set out on a search for her younger brother Bonzo. Along the way, players will encounter strange enemies and allies as they travel through the fairy tale-inspired land of Luxia. The artstyle looks to take heavy inspiration from Earthbound and Mother 3, even bearing similar resemblance in its battle screens and enemies. Some sections of the game also seem to call back to the black-and-white motif seen in parts of Undertale.
Oddventure releases in 2022 for PC and Switch.
