After spending some time with a created ballplayer in MLB The Show 21, some fans may begin to wonder about what upgrade options are available to them. Indeed, it is possible to improve a ballplayer in this new baseball simulation game, but exactly how that is done may not be entirely clear. For those players that are slightly confused by the upgrade system in MLB The Show 21, this guide contains all of the details that they will need.
To start, it is important to take a moment to detail what Archetypes are in MLB The Show 21. Quite simply, there are seven preliminary Archetypes that fans will have access to upon creating a new ballplayer, and they determine the character's primary position. A player can view and change their ballplayer's Archetype from the Loadout menu, which is accessed from under the "My Player" tab, and they should lock one in before diving too deeply into upgrades.
With that established, one of the primary avenues for upgrading a created ballplayer in MLB The Show 21 is to advance through an Archetype's Program. To do this, fans will need to complete various tasks in Road to the Show and Diamond Dynasty, and they will earn new Perks, Equipment, Stubs, and even upgraded Archetypes as they advance. To see full details on a Program's tasks and rewards, players should highlight the equipped Archetype in the Loadout menu and press the input that appears next to "View Program" at the bottom of the screen.
Alternatively, MLB The Show 21 players can purchase upgrades for their characters, in the form of Perks and Equipment, through the Community Marketplace. Items obtained in this way should be equipped through the Loadout menu in order to upgrade a ballplayer, as is the case with Perks and Equipment that are earned through an Archetype Program. That said, this secondary approach can prove to be quite expensive, and fans should make absolutely sure that they are committed to a purchase before they make it.
To note, each Archetype has its own Program, and progress does not carry over from one to another if a player ultimately decides to change positions in MLB The Show 21. It is also worth mentioning that a ballplayer's attributes will increase as they participate in Road to the Show matches. While this is an upgrade path in its own right, fans need not be too concerned with it, as those increases will come naturally as they continue to play the relevant game mode.
