Mortal Kombat 2021: 10 Best Characters In The Movie, Ranked By Their Accuracy To The Games
The new Mortal Kombat film tells the story of Cole Young, a new character in the MK universe. Young plays a pivotal role in the events leading up to the 10th Mortal Kombat Tournament. Shang Tsung and his Outworld forces threaten the rules of the tournament as they invade Earthrealm.
The movie features many familiar fighters from the games, and for the most part, the characters are very accurate to their video game counterparts. Some of these Hollywood renditions do stand out above others, and the familiar characters blend well with the addition of Cole Young. In all, director Simon McQuoid did a wonderful job bringing these fierce warriors to life on the big screen.
10 Shang Tsung
Shang Tsung is the evil sorcerer behind Outworld's invasion of Earthrealm. His goal is to kill all of Earthrealm's warriors before the tenth Mortal Kombat Tournament, thereby making Outworld the victor, and allowing him to enslave Earthrealm.
Shang Tsung's character design and evil motives are very similar to the games, though the film only shows a glimpse of his power. Look for this character to be more fleshed out in a sequel.
9 Mileena
Created by Shang Tsung and daughter of Shao Kahn, Mileena's role in the film is one of Shang Tsung's vicious Outworld warriors. Not much of her true backstory is revealed, but her abilities and her terrifying Tarkatan mouth are spot on.
Mileena teleports around her opponents with ease and launches rapid attacks with her trademark sais. Unfortunately, Mileena's lack of lines gives new fans little information about who she really is, and why she is so important in the MK universe.
8 Kung Lao
The hat-wielding warrior Kung Lao is a dear friend of Liu Kang and a fellow trainee under Raiden. Kung Lao's abilities are shown off to the max, including a devastating fatality performed on Nitara. Kung Lao plays a large role in the development of Kano in the film.
Much of Kung Lao's background is explained by Liu Kang. Lao even demonstrates his own teleportation in the film, which is just like his combo from the games.
7 Sonya Blade
Sonya Blade has a long military background with Jax, her major. In the film, she has figured out what Mortal Kombat is before anyone else. Her fighting style in the movie is much like her video game skills, minus the relentless jump kick combo.
This version of Sonya Blade is not a marked warrior, like Jax or Young, but she fights alongside them in spite of having any powers. She will likely be even more like her in-game self in the sequel.
6 Jax
Jax goes through more change than anyone else in the film. Since having his arms destroyed by Sub-Zero, his new mechanical arms were lackluster at best in the beginning. Jax finds his own strength though, as his metal arms become superpowered while attempting to lift a large statue piece off of Sonya.
From this point, Jax's combat is very accurate to the video game version of himself. Jax goes on to defeat Reiko with a barbaric fatality and even does a version of the gotcha grab.
5 Liu Kang
Liu Kang's character is introduced after Kano, Sonya, and Young travel to find the ancient temple where they may train for Mortal Kombat. Kang demonstrates his power to Kano and Young in training, but he is devastated by the loss of Kung Lao.
Liu Kang uses his fire-wielding abilities in a similar way to his video game counterpart. He launches a fireball at Kano and summons the powerful fire dragon to defeat Kabal.
4 Kano
Kano is a mercenary and leader of the black dragon cartel. He is introduced first as Sonya's prisoner after she captured him for assassinating one of Earthrealm's chosen warriors. Kano acts exactly like one would expect the in-game version of Kano would, as his character very untrustworthy and full of hilarious one-liners.
Kano retains his knife skills from the games and even earns his laser-eye ability after a shouting match with Kung Lao. Of course, Kano betrays Earthrealm's warriors and joins the side of Shang Tsung. Once a mercenary, always a mercenary.
3 Raiden
Raiden's full power is barely shown in the film, but it is heavily implied that the thunder god is immensely powerful. The movie only shows Raiden in defense, and excellently portrays his abilities to teleport himself and others, even between realms.
Raiden definitely has a power showcase coming in the sequel, where viewers will likely see a showdown between himself and Shang Tsung. Towards the end of the film, it is implied that despite his losses, Shang Tsung is not done wreaking havoc under Raiden's watchful eye.
2 Scorpion
Scorpion's heartbreaking origin is the very first scene in the film and an ongoing underlying narrative for the entire movie. The opening scene shows the Shirai Ryu under attack by Lin Kuei warriors and Bi Han, with Hanzo Hasashi meeting his end after attempting to rescue his family.
Hanzo battles his way through Hell and gains his own iconic powers of fire. We hear his trademark "Get over here!" command towards the end of the movie, and his fire breathing fatality is demonstrated to perfection.
1 Sub-Zero
Bi Han, the original Sub-Zero (and eventual Noob Saibot) is depicted perfectly throughout the entire movie. In the opening moments, we see Bi Han as a cold killer, destroying the Shirai Ryu with his ice powers. We then see him purse Cole Young and even obliterate Jax's arms by freezing and crushing them.
Sub-Zero is the primary villain in the film, despite working under Shang Tsung. The battle between himself and Scorpion is teased all the way to the end. Sub-Zero's abilities are near identical to the games, and it is clear that this character was fine-tuned to the very last detail.
