Fortnite Launches 'The Crossover' Event with NBA Skins
Fortnite is revealing yet another one of its high-profile collaborations. The game has become synonymous with bringing pop culture icons into the fold, with its latest announcement coming today - the NBA is now in Fortnite.
Epic Games' enduringly popular free-to-play title has an extensive history with bringing major sports into the game. Fortnite added skins for all 32 NFL teams nearly three years ago, updating the uniforms last fall during the 2020 season. Epic then added soccer skins earlier this year from some of the world's top clubs, and included Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar Jr. as Season 6's secret Battle Pass skin. With football and soccer under its belt, Fortnite has now turned to basketball.
Strategically launched just days before the NBA Playoffs begin, "The Crossover" introduces a variety of NBA-themed content for players to check out. Debuting on May 21, the In The Paint cosmetic set gives buyers access to 31 uniforms, comprised of all 30 NBA teams in addition to a Fortnite-inspired ensemble. Also launching on the same day is the Shoot and Score Pack, which includes a Hookshot Emote and Mini Hoop Back Bling, which can be customized to display a player's favorite team, similarly to the NFL skins. Beyond the new cosmetics comes new Locker Bundles, hand-selected by NBA guards Trae Young and Donovan Mitchell, which will arrive in the item shop next week.
NBA cosmetics aren't the only thing to amount from "The Crossover." The collaboration is also introducing Fortnite NBA Team Battles, which is a five-day competition featuring all 30 NBA teams. Starting today, fans will have the chance to sign up and join their favorite team in a communal effort to earn in-game rewards and V-Bucks. The first three days of the competition have players completing general Challenge Tasks to unlock the "Spin!" in-game spray and banner. The competition gets real the last two days when the leaderboards go live, with the top three teams earning rewards. Third place gets 100 V-Bucks, second gets 200, and first place gets 500 V-Bucks along with the NBA Championship Trophy Back Bling.
While this is the first presence of the NBA in Fortnite, the game has already had a presence in the NBA. Beyond the previously mentioned players who've assembled their Locker Bundles, New Orleans Pelicans guard Josh Hart wore custom Fortnite sneakers during a 2018 game. The addition of another major sports organization like the NBA should only help to boost the game's visibility and may entice some basketball fans to give the game a try.
The new NBA collaboration is sure to interest plenty of gamers, but not everyone is necessarily keen on having real-world sports involved in a battle royale shooter. Thankfully "The Crossover" isn't the only new Fortnite content, as the game just launched its Impossible Escape LTM, giving fans a whole new gameplay experience.
Fortnite is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
