Mass Effect 1: Should You Kill Dr. Saleon? | Game Rant
Dr. Saleon appears in a side quest in Mass Effect 1. There are two ways to handle the quest Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon, and though both options end in a similar manner, it can affect Renegade and Paragon levels for both Commander Shepard and another character later on.
This quest has story spoilers regarding the quest Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon in Mass Effect 1.
Dr. Saleon is a Salarian scientist that Garrus Vakarian was investigating during his time at C-Sec. Garrus was able to find proof that Dr. Saleon was using live beings to harvest organs from and trade them on the black market. As Commander Shepard comes to find out, Garrus is big on bringing bad people to justice, even if that means sidestepping the law to do so, what Mass Effect fans would consider a Renegade character, though this trait can be changed over time. C-Sec wasn't able to catch Saleon in time and failed to take further action. Now, Garrus wants Shepard to hunt him down.
Garrus's loyalty mission in Mass Effect 1 is simple enough. Shepard will start by locating Dr. Saleon's new lab in the Herschel system of the Kepler Verge. Of course, the Turian will request that he join Commander Shepard on this mission much like how Wrex wants to come along when Shepard hunts down his family's armor. Shepard doesn't have to bring him along, but it will affect some dialogue down the line.
Arriving at the new lab, Shepard simply needs to navigate through the building and survive the Test Subjects, which are basically Thorian Creepers, until meeting Dr. Saleon. He will try and lie about his true identity, and then Shepard must decide whether to let Garrus shoot and kill Dr. Saleon or tell him to back down.
Morality and the Renegade/Paragon system play a big part in the Mass Effect series. On the surface, it can affect some dialogue options that may become essential in handling missions. But beyond that, characters can actually become changed by the way Shepard handles conflict and responds to concerns from their crew. Allowing Garrus to kill Dr. Saleon or letting him go can turn Garrus further into the Renegade tree, or into a Paragon one, respectively. This will affect Garrus's character in Mass Effect 2, so here, the player is deciding how they want Garrus Vakarian to come out on the other side of the mission.
But regardless, Dr. Saleon will end up dead in Mass Effect. If Shepard tells Garrus to stand down, Saleon will try and object to being taken in and pull his gun on Shepard, but he has very little health.
Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
