New Destiny 2 Stasis Sidearm Exotic is Cooler Than Players Realize
Destiny 2 keeps on delivering hype-inducing trailers, and this time it's Season of the Splicer's turn, the penultimate Season before the roadmap for the game reaches Year 5. When that happens a new expansion will presumably be added to the game in the form of "The Witch Queen," and alongside it, a new round of Seasons will commence with S16 presumably being the first. Despite the transmog debacle, with players reportedly having to wait years to turn all armors into ornaments, Destiny 2 is in a pretty good state. It's unclear when in 2022 The Witch Queen will kick off Destiny 2's next content year, but Season of the Splicer is the next step for the game.
The trailer for Destiny 2's Season of the Splicer was juicy, and it revealed a lot of interesting things coming. First and foremost, the light is gone from the Last City and the Tower, with Guardians turning to Ikora for answers. It has been a long time, but Ikora is finally getting a little love, and alongside her, the Vex are getting it too. The Vex were in the shadows for a while now in Destiny 2's story arc, but now it seems they are the ones casting the shadows.
The Season will revolve around an old ally called Mithrax, Kell of Light, one of the last "splicers," which basically means Fallen with the ability to commune with machines. The Vault of Glass is finally coming back from the first Destiny too, and a new seasonal six-player matchmade activity is being added to the game. This new Season's signature Exotic weapon is a sidearm called Cryosthesia 77K, and it was almost immediately overlooked due to the fact that sidearms are usually Energy weapons (with a few noteworthy exceptions), and mostly overshadowed by better options. However, this Stasis weapon may have a trick up its sleeve.
Some very observant Destiny 2 fans have reported an interesting detail from the Season of the Splicer's reward page, which may allude to a far brighter future for the Cryosthesia 77K sidearm than many people anticipated. The Cryosthesia 77K likely owes its name to the word "cryostasis," which makes the weapon do exactly what it says in the name: freeze enemies through the power of Stasis. This Exotic weapon was shown in the trailer as having a peculiar perk that fires a Stasis-infused shot at enemies after killing off a few of them first by using the Cryosthesia 77K, which could stem from a unique kill clip mechanic.
The Stasis blast shot from the sidearm when it is infused is an interesting take on the weapon per se, but many players quickly assumed that it is going to be an Energy weapon. However, the weapon is pointing at the left on the Season of the Splicer's reward page, which would normally mean that it's going to be a Kinetic gun instead. This wasn't officially confirmed, but looking at any Kinetic weapon in Destiny 2, it makes a lot of sense for the Cryosthesia 77K to be Kinetic too.
If this proves to be the case, then this Exotic sidearm may have a few uses, after all. New builds with characters wielding it could spring up here and there, and it is unknown if it will pair well with the upcoming new Stasis aspects launching alongside the Season of the Splicer on May 11. Regardless, this is big for the new Destiny 2 content, and it is quite likely that the Cryosthesia 77K will see some action if it's viable.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
