New Pokemon Snap Outpaces N64 Original 4 Times Over in UK

Pokemon certainly hasn't had a dull moment this year. Pokemon cards continues to skyrocket in popularity, The Pokemon Company kicked off the franchise' 25th anniversary with a massive Pokemon Presents in February revealing several upcoming Pokemon titles, and now New Pokemon Snap has officially released on the Nintendo Switch.

While fans of the franchise new and old have dreamed of a sequel to the original Nintendo 64 Pokemon Snap for years, it's safe to say many were caught off guard when New Pokemon Snap was officially revealed last summer. The game has gone on to receive praise from fans and critics alike, even outpacing the original N64 game's launch four times over in the UK.

GamesIndustry.biz has released a report for last week's physical game sales in the UK. New Pokemon Snap is already topping charts, far outperforming the original Pokemon Snap's launch in the country up to four times over, which GamesIndustry.biz notes as a likely symptom of the Nintendo 64's poor sales in the UK. The new title's launch is also 2.5 times bigger than the physical release for the last Pokemon spin-off, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX.

Although Pokemon Snap is beloved by fans of the franchise all over the world, it seems the original title struggled in the UK back in 2000 thanks to the Nintendo 64's competition with the original PlayStation, which sold 5.4 million units compared to the N64's 1.5 million. However, New Pokemon Snap has now not only debuted in UK's top boxed games spot this week, beating out the highly anticipated PS5 game Returnal, but has also managed to become the third biggest Nintendo Switch launch this year, only behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury and Monster Hunter Rise.

New Pokemon Snap has introduced players to the all-new Lental region, which is filled with lush, vibrant environments for players to observe their favorite monsters in. The game includes over three times the Pokemon than the original Pokemon Snap title, and introduces new mechanics like the Illumina Phenomenon, the ability to edit and share photos, as well as some other surprises.

While the Nintendo 64 may have hindered Pokemon Snap's UK sales in 2000, the Nintendo Switch's strong sales seems to be propelling the success of many titles all over the world. While the Pokemon franchise seems to be on fire right now, it will be interesting to see how Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl perform when they release later this year.

New Pokemon Snap is available now on Nintendo Switch.
