Pokemon GO: How to Beat Sierra (Luminous Legends Y) | Game Rant
Pokemon GO has a new event currently active with it being the Luminous Legends Y event. A large focus of this event is on Team GO Rocket and their Shadow Pokemon that players can rescue after battling them. Because of this, both the grunts and leaders of Team GO Rocket have brand new teams and Shadow Pokemon to go up against.
Thanks to the new team compositions for Team GO Rocket's leaders in Pokemon GO, players will need rework their strategies for the battles against them. This is especially true for Sierra, who only keeps one Pokemon from her previous team lineup.
While players aren't required to face Team GO Rocket, defeating its grunts and leaders is necessary for many of the Luminous Legends Y timed research and field research tasks. Those looking to earn the rewards from those tasks will have to prepare to face all three of Team GO Rocket's leaders, Sierra included.
No matter what, Sierra's first party member will always be Sneasel. This Pokemon is a dual Dark and Ice-type, making it weak to Fighting, Fairy, Bug, Steel, Fire, and Rock-type moves. However, it also resists damage from Ghost, Ice, Dark, and Psychic-type moves.
Compared to the rest of Sierra's team, Sneasel is the weakest party member. However, it serves as a good Pokemon to force Sierra to use her Protect Shields on so that later Pokemon can't be protected. If players want to deal with Sneasel quickly, however, the best Pokemon for that job are:
Lucario - Counter and Aura Sphere
Conkeldurr - Counter and Dynamic Punch
Breloom - Counter and Dynamic Punch
Machamp - Counter and Dynamic Punch
Blaziken - Counter and Focus Blast
Sierra has a pool of three different Pokemon that she can send out as her second party member. The first of these is Gliscor, a dual Ground and Flying-type Pokemon. Its unique typing makes it only weak to Ice and Water-type moves while also resisting damage from Electric, Fighting, Bug, Poison, and Ground-type moves.
Although Gliscor has a lot of resistances, there are still plenty of Pokemon that can play against its weaknesses. Some highly recommended Pokemon for this battle include:
Mamoswine - Powder Snow and Avalanche
Abomasnow - Powder Snow and Weather Ball
Mr. Rime - Ice Shard and Ice Punch
Alolan Ninetales - Powder Snow and Weather Ball
Walrein - Waterfall and Blizzard
Another Pokemon that Sierra has the potential to send out as her second party member is the pure Fairy-type Pokemon, Granbull. Being a Fairy-type Pokemon, Granbull is only weak to Steel and Poison-type moves while resisting Fighting, Bug, Dark, and Dragon-type moves.
Steel-type Pokemon and Pokemon with Steel-type moves will make quick work of Sierra's Granbull. Poison-type moves are also going to be very effective in this battle. If players know that Granbull is to be expected within their current encounter with Sierra, the best Pokemon to bring against it are:
Metagross - Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash
Attack Deoxys - Poison Jab and Zap Cannon
Roserade - Poison Jab and Sludge Bomb
Genesect - Metal Claw and Magnet Bomb
White Kyurem - Steel Wing and Blizzard
The last Pokemon that Sierra has the potential to use as her second Pokemon is Ampharos. This Pokemon is a pure Electric-type, making only having a weakness toward Ground-type moves while also resisting Steel, Electric, and Flying-type moves.
Luckily for Pokemon GO players, Sierra's Ampharos isn't capable of mega evolving into Mega Ampharos. The fight however can still be troublesome for players that don't expect it. Because of this, the best Pokemon for the battle against Ampharos are:
Therian Landorus - Mud Shot and Earthquake
Excadrill - Mud-Slap and Earthquake
Groudon - Mud Shot and Earthquake
Garchomp - Mud Shot and Earthquake
Rhyperior - Mud-Slap and Earthquake
Moving onto the Pokemon that can appear as Sierra's third and final Pokemon, the first of this pool is Houndoom. This Pokemon is a dual Dark and Fire-type, making it weak to Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water-type moves. It however also resists Steel, Ghost, Grass, Ice, Dark, Fire, and Psychic-type moves.
Like with Ampharos, Sierra's Houndoom isn't capable of mega evolving into Mega Houndoom. It however can still cause trouble as the final encounter within the battle with Sierra. Some highly recommended Pokemon for this challenging battle include:
Rampardos - Smack Down and Rock Slide
Kingler - Bubble and Crabhammer
Therian Landorus - Rock Throw and Earth Power
Conkeldurr - Counter and Dynamic Punch
Kyogre - Waterfall and Hydro Pump
Another Pokemon that Sierra can use as her final team member is the dual Water and Dragon-type Pokemon, Kingdra. It is only weak to Fairy-type and Dragon-type moves in battle while also being able to resist damage from Steel, Water, and Fire-type moves.
Being part Dragon-type, players can make some risky plays by using their own Dragon-type Pokemon against Kingdra. If players want to remain on the safer side however, Fairy-types are very capable of helping take Sierra's Kingdra down. The best ones are:
Gardevoir - Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Togekiss - Charm and Dazzling Gleam
Mega Altaria - Peck and Dazzling Gleam
Xerneas - Tackle and Moonblast
Granbull - Charm and Play Rough
The last possible Pokemon that Sierra can have part of her Pokemon party is Drapion. This Pokemon is a dual Poison and Dark-type, giving it only a weakness against Ground-type moves. Drapion meanwhile also resists damage from Psychic, Ghost, Grass, Poison, and Dark-type moves.
While Drapion only having one weakness can make planning for it a little difficult, there are plenty of hard hitting Ground-type Pokemon and Ground-type moves that can be used for this final battle. The best ones for it are:
Therian Landorus - Mud Shot and Earthquake
Excadrill - Mud Shot and Earthquake
Mamoswine - Mud-Slap and Bulldoze
Nidoking - Fury Cutter and Earth Power
Groudon - Mud Shot and Earthquake
After Sierra's defeat, players will get the chance to rescue a Shadow Sneasel. Despite Sierra's Sneasel always appearing normally in the fight, the one that players are able to save has the small chance to appear in its shiny form. It is easily distinguishable from a normal Sneasal due to the shiny form having a bright pink coloring.
Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
