Resident Evil Village Has a Sneaky Reference to a Resident Evil 2 Character

While Resident Evil Village has taken the world by storm, many still consider 1998's Resident Evil 2 to be the poster child for the franchise. To that end, one Resident Evil Village player found that developers managed to sneak in a tiny reference to the classic game.

In Ethan Winters' house, players searching his bookshelf will come across a variety of different titles. One of these reads as "Gun Survivalist: A Heavy Firearms Manual for Field Combat Situations by Joseph Kendo." In a sea of meaningless books, this reference can be easily overlooked, but players need to think all the way back to the early days of the franchise to understand the Easter egg. Long-running fans of the series will recognize Joseph Kendo as the brother of Robert Kendo. Together, the brotherly duo comprised the "Kendo Gun Shop" in the PS1 classic Resident Evil 2.

Since the remake of Resident Evil 2 stands as one of the best-selling in the entire franchise, it should come as no surprise to fans that they would find an Easter egg related to the game. It's also not the first time that the Kendo name has resurfaced in subsequent games. They are of course responsible for creating the S.T.A.R handgun known as the "Samurai's Edge." This is highlighted in Resident Evil 4 when Leon's starter pistol is inscribed with the words "Kendo Custom Shop."

In response to Redditor thegaminggopher's original post, one commenter also noted that players can find a book entitled "A Historical Look Into The Architecture of Eastern European Castles and Keeps by George Trevor." Of course, this is an even older reference to the original Resident Evil game, as George Trevor is the architect responsible for designing the Spencer Mansion in which the majority of the original game takes place.  The book's title is likely a nod to the oddly medieval, gothic overtones found in the interior of the Spencer Mansion.

While the debate about which early Resident Evil game is the best continues, it's exciting to see the latest iteration of the franchise harken back to its beginnings. Since Resident Evil Village has only been out for a very short period of time, there is likely a whole slew of references that have yet to be unearthed by fans. Still, the mere fact that two references can be found on a single bookshelf should be enough to spur eager fans into searching for more.

Resident Evil Village is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
