Resident Evil: Village Returns to Top of UK Boxed Sales Chart
Capcom’s Resident Evil: Village is back to being the top physical seller in the UK. Sales dipped to second place the week after release but secured a sizable lead despite declining sales in week three.
Resident Evil: Village dominated boxed sales when the game debuted in early May. The game lost its lead to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition in week two but is now back on top in the UK.
Sales of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition sunk to third place behind Resident Evil and the Switch port of Miitopia. Resident Evil: Village managed to reclaim the top spot despite losing 60% of sales from the previous week. According to gamesindustry.biz, RE: Village sold best on PlayStation consoles, continuing the trend from opening week. The PS4 and PS5 respectively accounted for 44% and 29% of the game’s sales. Note that these numbers only reflect the sale of disk copies, not digital downloads.
Resident Evil’s return to number one had more to do with Mass Effect’s flagging numbers rather than an unexpected spike in sleeper sales. Mass Effect: Legendary Edition lost 76% of its sales since opening week. Like Resident Evil: Village, it sold best on PlayStation Consoles, with the PS4 accounting for 72% of physical copies sold. This imbalance may be partly attributed to the original releases not being available on the PS4. The Xbox One already supported the complete Mass Effect trilogy via backward compatibility.
While it fell well short of dethroning Resident Evil: Village, Miitopia still saw a highly successful launch in the UK. The Switch port sold 30% more copies than the game’s original debut on the 3DS in 2017. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Animal Crossing: New Horizons rounded out the rest of the UK’s top five sellers. The former saw a considerable spike due to the increased availability of PS5’s in the United Kingdom. A full 88% of copies sold were for Sony’s next-gen console.
Switch titles dominated the second half of the top ten. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury secured the #6 spot, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at #8, Minecraft for Switch at #9, and New Pokémon Snap at #10. The only exception was Grand Theft Auto 5, which surged to the #7 spot on the UK sales charts.
As for other new releases, the console edition of Rust debuted at #11. It sold slightly better on PS4 but was successful on both consoles. Meanwhile, Subnautica: Sub Zero sunk to 14th place after debuting at #5 in the UK. No other new releases made it into the British top 40.
Resident Evil: Village is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S.
