Sonya Blade's Motion Capture Artist Wants to Be in Mortal Kombat Game Again
With the recent release of the Mortal Kombat movie, discourse regarding the legacy of the 19-year-old franchise continues to stir among longtime fans of the series. In most cases, the biggest fans of Mortal Kombat were often those who worked closely with the development of the games themselves. In the earlier titles, from the original Mortal Kombat until Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Midway Games, now currently known as NetherRealm Studios, utilized digitized graphics based on the real-life motion capture artists and models used for its titles.
Daniel Pesina, the original artist for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2, is perhaps one of the most notorious examples as fans remember the tumultuous relationship between Pesina and Midway at the time. Another model from that historic era of Mortal Kombat has been slowly making her return to the public eye, reflecting on her time with the company and expressing interest in getting back into series that's near and dear to her as much as her fans.
Although she has worked with Midway since 1993's NBA Jam and as the primary antagonist, Head Mistress Helga, in 1994's light-gun shooter Revolution X, Kerri Ann Hoskins's breakout role has been her portrayal as Sonya Blade. Starting in Mortal Kombat 3 and ending with Mortal Kombat Gold, Sonya's iconic green tank-top and matching bottoms as well as her overall likeliness was handled by Hoskins herself.
In a recent interview done by podcast host Jonathan Holmes, Kerri Ann Hoskins discussed several highlights during her time with Midway, some of which includes being pregnant with twins while being cast for the role of Kia, one of the sub-bosses in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, her trials and tribulations growing up, and other personal life stories that fans of the model as well as Sonya Blade herself can appreciate. When asked if she would like to reprise her role as the veteran Special Forces general, Hoskins expressed a desire to work closely with the Mortal Kombat games rather than a film, which is understandable due to her origins.
In 1997's Mortal Kombat 4, she also provided voice-over talent for the cutscenes in the game. Since then, Hoskins has recently contributed to providing motion capture for another fighting game, this time being Rare's Killer Instinct. In the 2013 revival, she was the motion capture artist for Maya, the Amazonian warrior whose first appearance was Killer Instinct 2. The possibility of Hoskins reprising her role as Sonya is very high as NetherRealm Studios' penchant for nostalgia continues for the Mortal Kombat series.
The legendary Mortal Kombat 3 outfit that Hoskins once wore is already in Mortal Kombat 11 and a recent skin pack based on the 1995 movie had Bridgette Wilson-Sampras reprise her role as Sonya Blade among other returning cast members.
