The Best Light Demons In Shin Megami Tensei 3 Remaster
When the Conception transforms Tokyo into a post-apocalypse, the player – as the Demi-Fiend – must find a way to save the world from destruction. Thankfully, some Demons in Shin Megami Tensei 3 Remaster may share the same convictions as the player. True to Shin Megami Tensei trends, these Demons often come from popular folklore and mythology – albeit with their own twist.
Of the three Demon categories in Nocturne, those in the Light Type have associations with more mundane and "benevolent" creatures in popular myth. However, some Light Demons do possess more power than the rest of their kind. Here are the best of the best.
10 Bishamon
Bishamon, one of the Buddhist Four Heavenly Kings, represents north of the four cardinal directions. As a deity, Bishamon embodies wealth, fortune, and victory in war. In Nocturne, the Kishin Bishamon is attainable at Level 72 via Fusion after his boss battle. His affinities include Reflects: Fire; Expel: Void; and Weak: Ice.
Bishamon also possesses an interesting and useful set of skills. His Attack All (Innate) immediately allows his users to strike all foes within a single strike. Moreover, his Endure (Passive) at Level 76 enables users to survive a killing blow with 1 HP.
9 Skadi
In Norse Mythology, the giantess Skadi is associated with both the winter and the hunt. Meanwhile, Celtic Mythology depicts her as a goddess of shadow and darkness. In Nocturne, Skadi takes the appearance of a pitch-black humanoid entity with white hair, wearing a green cape with yellow-black details.
Players can obtain the Lady Skadi at Level 74 via evolution from the Megami Scathach. She's worth the wait, given her Void: Force/Expel/Curse and Weak: Elec affinities. Moreover, at Level 77, she gains the Elec Repel (Passive) that grants her user Expel: Electricity. At Level 78, her Earthquake attack deals severe physical damage.
8 Thor
Thor, one of the most popular figures in Norse Mythology, makes an appearance in the Shin Megami Tensei franchise as the fabled war god. Also known as the Lord of Lightning, Thor is considered one of the most powerful among the Asgardian gods. In Nocturne, Thor initially locked up the Demi-Fiend and forced them to prove their worth to him in order to be freed. As such, the Kishin Thor is only attainable at Level 76 as a Fusion after his boss battle.
In terms of affinities, Thor Absorbs: Electricity; Void: Expel; and Weak: Curse, Nerve. Meanwhile, his notable abilities include Avenge (Innate), a passive that gives him a 50-percent chance to counter a physical attack and return it with heavy physical damage. Additionally, his Mediarahan at Level 77 can grant Full HP to the party.
7 Mithra
Another recurring Demon in the Shin Megami Tensei universe is the Mithra, the Zoroastrian deity that protects the truth. Its appearance takes on the appearance of a winged human with a lion's head, with a long serpent wrapped around its body. In Nocturne, players can obtain him at Level 78 via Fusion after his boss battle.
Mithra's interest lies in his privilege as the only being to learn Death Pact, which he does at Level 79. This is a conversational skill which grants high recruitment rate to the Demi-Fiend. Its other abilities also focus on attempting to instant-kill enemies (e.g., Mamudoon, Mahamaon), or halving their total health (Holy Wrath).
6 Raphael
The Archangel Raphael makes his arrival in Shin Megami Tensei as a Demon. He originates from Christian Mythology, in which he is the Guardian of the Tree of Life. In Nocturne, the Demi-Fiend has the chance to fight Raphael if they are against Yosuga's Reason. After their boss battle, players can undergo Fusion (Uriel + Any Dominion) to obtain him at Level 84.
Raphael's Affinities include Reflects: Expel and Void: Fire/Force. He also has special interactions with all Divine Demons, as well as a great set of skills. He can create shields to repel non-almighty physical (Tetrakarn) or magical (Makarakarn) attacks for all allies. Moreover, Prayer at Level 85 can give all living party members a full health restore. Lastly, Holy Wrath at Level 88 has a chance to halve the HP of enemies in combat.
5 Gabriel
In Christian Mythology, Gabriel serves as God's Left Hand, representing the Holy Spirit. In Nocturne, she fights the Demi-Fiend if they are against Yosuga's Reason. This is the only way players can obtain Gabriel at Level 87 via Fusion (Raphael + Any Throne).
As a Summonable Ally, Gabriel has affinities Reflect: Expel and Void: Fire/Electricity/Force. As with Raphael, Gabriel has special interactions with all Divine Demons. In terms of Skills, his Samrecarm (Innate) can revive an ally to Full HP, while he can deal heavy electric damage via Ziodyne (Innate) and Maziodyne (Innate). His Persuade (Interrupt) at Level 89 forces an indecisive Demon to accept the Demi-Fiend's deal.
4 Michael
Archangel Michael is usually seen as the head of the Army of God in the war against fallen angels. He also makes a recurring appearance as either a Persona or a Demon throughout the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. In Nocturne, players can only attain the Seraph Michael at Level 90 by fusing Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel during a Full Kagutsuchi. Michael is also essential in summoning Metatron.
In terms of affinities, Michael has Reflect: Expel and Void: Magic. Like other Archangels, he has special interactions with all Divine Demons. His Endure (Innate) skill allows his user to survive a fatal blow with 1 HP. Meanwhile, Victory Cry (Passive) at Level 91 heals its user gradually while walking, provided they are the active combatant. Lastly, his Megidolaon at Level 94 deals mega almighty damage to all foes.
3 Vishnu
Vishnu in Hindu Mythology is the Preserver, a being who strives to care for humanity and its welfare. In the Shin Megami Tensei universe, Vishnu makes a frequent appearance as either a Demon or a Persona, but still retains his peaceful origins. Players can summon Vishnu at Level 93 through the fusion of Skadi and Uriel.
Vishnu's affinities include Reflect: Expel; Void: Death; and Resist: All. These unique Resist stat makes Vishnu quite an asset in team fights. Moreover, its Prayer (Innate) can restore Full HP across all living party members, while Holy Wrath (Innate) has the chance of halving the HP of all opponents. Perhaps most impressively, its Hell Gaze (Innate) has a 70-percent chance to instant kill a foe.
2 Shiva
Alongside Shiva and Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Destroyer perpetuates the cycle of the universe through the benefits of destruction. As a recurring character in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Shiva can take the form of a Persona or a Demon, depending on the game. In Nocturne, players can only summon Shiva at Level 94 once a Level 95 Demi-Fiend fuses Barong and Rangda.
Its affinities include Void: Expel/Death and Resists: Physical, Magic, Ailments. Shiva also has special dialogue with Naga and Raja Naga. However, perhaps more interesting would be its set of skills. Like Michael, Shiva has Victory Cry (Innate), which heals the user's HP while walking if it's the active combatant. Hassohappa (Innate) deals heavy physical damage with high accuracy and critical rates. At Level 99, Phys Drain (Passive) grants its user Drain: Physical.
1 Metatron
Perhaps the most powerful Light Demon in Nocturne, Metatron in Christian Mythology represents the Voice of God. It is said to possess a million eyes and mouths, with a status even higher than the Archangel Michael. The Demi-Fiend will meet the Seraph Metatron if they try to retrieve all the Candelabrum of the old gentleman. Players can only obtain Metatron at Level 95 via Fusion (Michael + Any Divine or Any Seraph, Tyrant sacrifice).
A notable aspect of Metatron is its sole possession of the Fire of Sinai skill, which boasts mega almighty damage. However, that's not its only incredible aspect. Mahamaon offers a 30-percent chance to instant-kill all foes, buffs with Tarukaja and Makakaja, and debuffs via Debilitate. Like Shiva and Michael, Metatron can also use Victory Cry.
