Valheim Mod Drops Players in World of Warcraft's Azeroth

Though Iron Gate AB's hit indie survival game Valheim is no longer topping charts on Steam every week, the game is still popular especially among a community that loves to create complex builds and mods. The base game's mechanics in Early Access allow for some impressive construction projects such as a giant Wall-E statue built in Valheim, but fans like Kromek on Nexus Mods have added even more to explore - in this case the entire map of Azeroth from World of Warcraft.

Valheim is based on Norse mythology and leaves its players free to explore a massive map with randomly generated features including creatures like Trolls. Its map has often been compared to games like Skyrim, as well as other open-world survival titles, so it seems inevitable that modders would figure out how to let other fans explore popular fantasy locales in a brand-new context.

Kromek's "Valheim of Warcraft" mod uploaded on May 8 reportedly utilizes all of the landmasses available in World of Warcraft Version 9.0, minus certain features like the maelstrom and access to "cosmetic worlds" like the Shadowlands - setting of the most recent World of Warcraft expansion. It starts players off on Timeless Isle and has portal hubs to every World of Warcraft starting hub, according to the mod's features description, with every zone using its own progression path.

One major difference between this project and the original World of Warcraft map is that Azeroth's landmasses have been reduced by 20 percent to make it all fit and be easier to explore. The Valheim modder, who thanks fellow Nexus Mods users billw2011 and Jaxrud for their help, says they intend to add classic World of Warcraft battlegrounds, cosmetic maps like Shadowlands, optional biomaps that are "more accurate to the game," and more.

Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft is one of the most successful games of all time, and stands as one of the longest-running MMORPGs thanks to a number of expansions over the years. Its locales have become so iconic to fans that many are recreated using building tools in various games beyond Valheim. For example, one Shadowlands player recently remade Elysian Hold in Minecraft.

The widespread popularity of Valheim following its release this February has led to developer Iron Gate preparing a long-reaching roadmap of new content set to arrive in the future. As fans wait for that official content, there are plenty of mods to play around with by creators including Kromek, such as one Valheim mod that makes crafting tables mobile.

Valheim is available now in Early Access on PC.
