Valheim Player Uses Trolls to Farm Materials with Basic Skill
Iron Gate Studio's Valheim has a heavy emphasis on resource gathering, and there are times when it can be incredibly time-consuming, especially early in the game when one's tools aren't up to scratch. Luckily, a Redditor has shown off a technique that can make one of the most laborious tasks in Valheim (its ore mining) much more bearable, using trolls of all things.
One of the first major tasks players will have to undertake in Valheim is mining copper. Usually, this involves earning a pickaxe by defeating the first boss, Eikthyr, discovering a copper vein, and spending a large portion of time chipping away at it in order to get every last bit of copper. Players will also need to repair their pickaxe during the process, and will most likely need to bring a handcart to carry the extremely heavy metal back to their base of operations. With this new technique, however, much of this process can be expedited by using trolls to do some hard labor.
The Reddit user who posted the video, aptly named HallucinogenicTroll, shows off their parrying skills by standing atop a vein of copper with their shield ready, blocking the clubs of two trolls who are trying to end his Viking's life. Trolls are notorious in Valheim, not only for their ability to effortlessly kill newer players, but also because they can destroy player-built structures and parts of the environment. HallucinogenicTroll uses this to their advantage, parrying the damage from the trolls and having their attacks hit the copper instead, busting it up into pre-mined chunks.
Not only does this technique allow gamers to mine copper much faster than usual, it technically allows Valheim players to skip the first boss, as a pickaxe can be crafted using the copper gained from the trolls' hard work. It should be noted that this technique isn't without its risks. Trolls in Valheim hit hard, and early in the game if one misses a couple of parries, they will likely be down for the count, so without HallucinogenicTroll's timing, players may be better off running around in circles and trying to bait the trolls into hitting the copper that way.
Being able to skip the earliest stages of Valheim will likely be extremely useful for many players. Having said that, there is something to be said for experiencing those opening few hours of the game, where one's Viking has to gather berries and use a stone axe to ward off the grey dwarves of the meadow biome. For the most part, this technique should likely be reserved for players who are starting up second world and want to expedite their progress, so they can get to the meat of the game, because there is a lot of joy to be had in Valheim's slow burn.
Valheim is available now on PC.
