Bethesda and MachineGames' Indiana Jones Game Isn't Releasing Anytime Soon

Bethesda, along with Wolfenstein developers MachineGames, have been working on a new Indiana Jones game for a little while now, with a reveal trailer appearing for the title in January of this year. While many took this to mean that the game was relatively far into its development though a new interview with Bethesda has put those notions to bed, with the company confirming that the Indiana Jones title is far from release-ready.

Indiana Jones isn't necessarily a title that is synonymous with video games. Despite a slew of games coming out in the late 80s and early 90s, along with a batch of educational games in the 2000s, the most well-known games based on the franchise may be the Lego Indiana Jones games published by LucasArts for PC and consoles. LucasArts (now Lucasfilm Games) is back, in tandem with Bethesda and MachineGames, to deliver an entirely original Indiana Jones game, with a teaser trailer being posted to the official Bethesda Twitter account.

With the announcement of the new Indiana Jones title, many fans have expressed concern regarding how the new game will impact the timeframe of other Bethesda titles, Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6. Much of this is due to Todd Howard being executive producer for the new game, despite currently spearheading the studio's other major IPs. Pete Hines, the senior vice president of global marketing & communications at Bethesda, has gone some way towards assuaging fans' fears, suggesting that while Howard is executive producer on the project "His main focus remains Directing the upcoming Starfield and TES6 games," which won't be affected by the new Indy game.

Considering how early in development the untitled Indiana Jones game appears to be, Hines was reasonably cagey about the details in his interview with GameSpot earlier in the week. Described as being in the "very, very, very early stages," with Hines making the point that they are driven by how far along the content itself is when it comes to making concrete announcements. With Starfield being announced at E3 and The Elder Scrolls 6 likely taking priority after that, Bethesda Game Studios has its hands full, and MachineGames will likely have another Wolfenstein in the works during that period as well, meaning that the Indiana Jones game could be years away.

While fans of Indiana Jones may be disappointed to hear that Bethesda's interpretation of the adventurous archaeologist won't be hitting PC or consoles any time soon, people hanging out for other Bethesda titles will likely be glad to know where the studio's priorities lie. An Indy title will surely make a great AAA video game, however, it is of little surprise that Bethesda is focusing on a brand new IP like Starfield and its massively popular Elder Scrolls series first and foremost.

MachineGames' Indiana Jones game is currently in development.
