Destiny 2 Player Shares Great Ideas for Improving Gambit
The Gambit game mode in Destiny 2 has long been a major point of discussion for players as it acts as a strong middle ground for balancing the dual sandboxes of PVP and PVE together. Strangely, the basic mechanics of the Destiny 2's Gambit aren't often the major talking point, outside of requesting nerfs to certain weapons and builds that can make invading or being invaded a total nightmare.
One Destiny 2 player, however, has brought up an interesting idea to the community for how to create a much more dynamic system that leans into established mechanics and offers a higher risk/reward payoff for invasions. Primarily, it has to do with the way that motes don't currently play much of a part for the invaders, apart from being a minor reward for killing enemy combatants and the required thresholds to unlock invasions in the first place.
This latest improvement comes from Twitter user, @mannyfresh2099, who suggests making the invasions themselves a gambit, as the game mode's namesake implies. Essentially, players would have to bank motes specifically into the invasion, with different amounts of motes giving bonuses like an overshield or heavy ammo. The result could mean that unbuffed players invade more often and the high-powered team killers that players face off against now are a rare sight that could turn the tables on which team wins a Gambit match in Destiny 2.
There are quite a few options that Bungie could take when it comes to implementing this type of mechanic, ranging all the way from completely game-breaking buffs, to giving players with lots of motes a minor advantage. Regardless, the implications could be huge for both the invaders as well as the invaded team, as invasions may become less likely, with players being reluctant to sacrifice motes for the invasion and less skilled players avoiding the mechanic altogether. There's still plenty of tweaking that would need to be done in order to make the mote-based invasions work, but it could go a long way towards reengaging players in Destiny 2's Gambit activities by blending all of its mechanics into each other more smoothly.
The original post also highlights some extra additions that could be made, including spreading Envoys across the map or giving each player a selectable role within the game mode. However, the mote-based invasions seems to be what many other players have quickly begun to attach to as the suggestion continues to spread across the Destiny 2 community. It's unclear exactly how much further Bungie intends to push the PVPVE game mode, but if Gambit is looking to reach the same lofty heights as activities like Trials of Osiris, then mote-based invasion could be a good place to start.
Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
