Red Dead Redemption 2 Players Discover Incredibly Violent Detail
When it comes to violence and gore in video games, few developers have been embroiled in as many high profile controversies as Rockstar Games. Among other things, earlier Grand Theft Auto titles drew heavy criticism for allowing players to decapitate NPCs with chainsaws and other brutal weapons. While the gruesomeness on display in the developer's flagship franchise has been toned down somewhat in recent years though, the Red Dead Redemption series remains as violent and bloody as ever.
As well as being able to hogtie NPCs and leave them for dead on train tracks, the game also allows players to feed their foes to wild animals while they're still alive. The graphic nature of Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't just apply to NPC injuries either, with the game's main playable protagonist in no way spared from the gore. Some players perhaps weren't aware at just how graphic the game really is until recently, however, when a Reddit user decided to share a shocking image of Arthur following a shootout gone wrong.
After the dust had settled, Redditor EyeOfDeath69 took a screenshot showing the true extent of the injuries that RDR2's main protagonist Arthur had obtained during the gunfight. As well as the usual cuts and bruises though, they noticed that a piece of Arthur's brain had been blown out and there were skull fragments surrounding the bullet's exit wound too. Those who are curious can check out the image for themselves by following the "source" link at the bottom of the page, although should be warned that it is definitely not safe for work, nor is it suitable for children.
While this may be one of the more gruesome examples that players have found since the game's release, it is far from the only one. Recently, another Redditor discovered that when blowing someone's head off with a shotgun in Red Dead Redemption 2, their gums and teeth can sometimes be seen flying through the air. A YouTuber also had several of their RDR2 videos taken down from the platform back in 2018 due to their glorification of extreme violence towards women.
Although Red Dead Redemption 2 is renowned for its impressive attention to detail, it's perhaps a little surprising to see this level of gore in such a prominent franchise. Some will argue that the game's box does clearly indicate that the game contains both "Blood and Gore" and "Intense Violence" and, as an "M" rated game, should only be played by those aged 18 or above. Even so, the image will likely be enough to make some parents think twice before ignoring ESRB ratings when buying games for their kids in the future.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
