Smallville Animated Series In Production From Original Series Stars
Turns out the CW's massive "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover event from 2019 isn't the last time Smallville will get its time in the sun. A new animated series based on the mid-2000s teen-angsty take on Superman's origin story is currently in the works, and two of the leads from the original are making it happen.
Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, who respectively played Clark Kent and Lex Luthor on Smallville, are apparently hard at work setting up something new in the show's universe. This news comes from a leaked Cameo by Welling (that's Cameo with a capital C, as in for the service where people can pay to receive personal messages from celebrities, not the Space Jam kind of cameo) where he seems to reveal the project. The video is all there is to go on at the moment, but Clark Kent wouldn't lie, would he?
"Michael Rosenbaum and I are actually working on an animated series to bring those characters back to life and use as many of the original cast members as possible," Welling said in the video. "Don't tell anybody though. It's a secret. We're still working on it." As iffy as it is without an official announcement, this is surely fantastic news for anyone who's missed those Hot Topic-era renditions of these classic DC characters. Plus, the notion that they're planning on bringing back as much of the original cast as they can is just that much more icing on this already decadent cake.
Smallville aired for 10 seasons from 2001 to 2011 on The WB (which transitioned into The CW halfway through the show's run) and followed the life of a young Clark Kent (played by Welling) in the days long before taking on the mantle of Superman. The series saw tons of weird and unexplained phenomena happening in the appropriately named tiny farm town, to the point where it almost became humorous to see the residents continue to act surprised when yet another stereotypical supervillain wreaked havoc or some poor student got powers from a random chunk of kryptonite just lying around. Some of it led to the origin of various other DC heroes and villains, while other times it was simply never mentioned again, because that's now TV works sometimes. The series ended just as Clark embraced his destiny and put on his superhero suit for the first time, but from a distance, because it was a really weird show in a few ways.
It's unknown if the animated series will be set during or after the events of the original, but it would be pretty cool to see how these particular versions of these characters went on with their lives after the story got to the point where most other Superman tales tend to start. But the suggestion that Welling and Rosenbaum plan to bring back as much of the original cast as possible might hint that it will be a continuation, since the show added a ton of new cast members over the years, and it would probably be difficult to find new stories to tell during that time period when it seems as though they've already been told.
Again, all that's there is Welling's video, and there's always the slightest chance that he was just being cheeky. But that's just a pessimist talking, and those types are such downers. So take it with a grain of salt, but don't be afraid to be a little positive. Nothing wrong with wanting to hear "somebody save me" one more time.
