The Happy Hob Beats Goldeneye 007 Without Taking Hit | Game Rant
One of the Nintendo 64's most iconic games, Goldeneye 007, has long been remembered as one of the best console first person shooters of all time. What many don't remember is just how challenging Goldeneye was on 00 Agent difficulty, with huge numbers of armed guards, a ton of a missions to complete, and the infamous Control mission forcing players to protect the incredibly slow-hacking Natalya. Twitch streamer, Aiden "The Happy Hob" Mason, has managed to push through all of these challenges, and all without being hit a single time.
Rare's Goldeneye 007 was released back in 1997, a video game tie-in with the James Bond film of the same name, and was revered for pushing the Nintendo 64 to its graphical limit, as well as for managing to make a first person shooter feel tight and responsive on the N64's cumbersome single-stick controller. As the Goldeneye featured unlockable cheat codes via completion of missions within certain timeframes, it has always had a highly competitive speed run and challenge run community, with many players streaming their runs on Twitch.
The Happy Hob is no stranger to challenges. He is perhaps best known on Twitch for his completion of the entire Soulsborne franchise without being hit a single time; a run that included Demons Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy, and concluded with BloodBorne. In a run that took around 3 and a half hours, The Happy Hob continued his no-hit tradition by managing to complete Goldeneye 007 in the same fashion, making it all the way from Dam to the the end of the final secret level, Egyptian without being tagged by a single enemy. Certain levels were troublesome for Mason, with Streets nearly ending the run due to an ammo shortage and Train requiring a restart after Natalya refused to start up the mission's final sequence.
Aside from the final mission of Goldeneye's campaign, finishing Control got the largest reaction from Mason, who had struggled with the mission in previous runs. Notorious for a lengthy sequence where players must protect the NPC, Natalya Simonova, Control also features a number of sentry turrets and a large number of enemies, making it challenging for casual playthroughs and Mason's challenge run alike. The final mission of the run, Egyptian, went relatively smoothly, despite Hob missing an 'easy kill' on the level's boss. As the boss died, Hob threw his arms in the air, screaming "Goldeneye no-hit run!" and running around his room, tossing his greenscreen over his head and later dancing with his dog, Link.
The no-hit run marks another impressive achievement for The Happy Hob, and is a world first for Goldeneye 007, with no other players managing this feat to date. What is perhaps more impressive, is that Goldeneye is still capturing imaginations today, over 23 years after its initial release for the Nintendo 64. The Happy Hob's run will certainly go down as an incredible accomplishment, however, given how competitive the community can be, it's possible that another challenger may step up to the plate soon.
