Destiny 2 Dev Discusses Why Trials Doesn’t Lock Loadout
Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris is the most competitive PVP mode the game has to offer. Naturally, that brings many different opinions on how Bungie could improve Trials of Osiris for Destiny 2. Bungie Senior Community Manager, Dylan "dmg04" Gafner, took to Twitter to gave some insights and feedback into the idea of locking loadouts in Trials of Osiris.
The idea of locking loadouts in Trials of Osiris comes from the idea that Trials of Osiris is an endgame activity similar to Grandmaster Nightfalls. Because of this, some players feel that Trials of Osiris should also have locked loadouts similar to Grandmaster Nightfalls. Thanks to Dylan, Guardians now have better insight into how Bungie looks at these kinds of ideas.
When a Destiny 2 Guardian mentioned giving Trials of Osiris the Grandmaster treatment and locking loadouts, Bungie's community manager took the time to respond, letting Guardians know that this is something the team at Bungie has already looked at. Dylan mentions it is not a great feeling to not have any wiggle room to change your setup and potentially lose a flawless match because of that.
The idea of locking loadouts doesn’t seem to be all lost however as Dylan further commented about possibly locking Armor only. This would prevent Destiny 2 Guardians from swapping their Exotic Armor pieces to get an advantage when their Super was ready. Dylan was clear to mention that there are no promises or ETA for that kind of change, just giving an example of something the Destiny 2 team has discussed around the pain points regarding Trials of Osiris.
With this news, Guardians have given their opinions about locked loadouts in Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris. Some players agree with the idea that Exotic swapping hurts the game, others agree with the idea that it would feel bad not being able to swap weapons to better counter the enemy team. Being able to successfully counter an opponent is a key piece of making a game like Destiny 2 feel competitive. Locking a Guardian’s entire loadout would mean that at the start of the match, during the loadout screen, Guardians would know if they were at a disadvantage, but could not change weapons to better equip themselves.
Unlike Destiny 2's Grandmaster Nightfalls, Guardians do not know exactly what they are going up against in every Trials of Osiris match. This makes locking loadouts much more impactful with less opportunity to plan and prepare. Locking Trials loadouts in Destiny 2 would mean that players would not get a chance to modify their loadout before finding out what the other team is using. This could cause loses that could have been avoided if only the players could switch weapons.
Locking Armor only could be a way for Bungie to remove the ability to swap Exotic Armor, preventing players from switching between Exotics that benefit their Super vs their neutral game. Such a change to Trials of Osiris is not guaranteed but has been discussed. Bungie will most likely make changes that will do the most good in revamping Trials of Osiris. Until then, Guardians will have to play Trials of Osiris in its current form.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
