Fan Art Reimagines Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin For Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Green Goblin is one of Spider-Man's oldest foes. The character has appeared in numerous comic book storylines, as well as in movies and video games. However, the one place the character hasn't shown up yet is in the MCU. While Marvel Studios did introduce the wall-crawler to their shared movie universe back in 2016, the Goblin has yet to make an appearance. Now, one fan decided to take it upon themselves to imagine what the MCU's Green Goblin might look like in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home if he was played by none other than the original actor to play the part, Willem Dafoe.

Dafoe first portrayed the character of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin in director Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movie back in 2002. In the film, Osborn is the CEO of Oscorp and the father of Spider-Man/Peter Parker's (Tobey Maguire) best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco). After experimenting on himself with an unstable performance-enhancing chemical, Norman gains superpowers and goes insane. He then steals an experimental military glider and flight suit to wreak havoc on New York City, taking on the persona of the Green Goblin and wearing a frightening, smiling green mask.

With Dafoe rumored to be returning to the role for Spider-Man: No Way Home, the artist who is known as datrinti posted artwork that reimagines the villain. As you can see, it depicts Dafoe as the classic supervillain but updated to fit with the MCU's aesthetic. The artist wisely makes the decision to actually reveal Dafoe's real smile. One of the biggest criticisms of Raimi's Green Goblin costume is that it completely covered up Dafoes face, giving the character an artificial smile, which is insane because the actor's actual smile is so sinister. The fan artist also makes the interesting decision to add a purple scarf in the second image, which is likely in reference to the purple elements of the comic book version of the character's costume, something that was also missing in the 2002 film. Hopefully, if Dafoe does reprise his role as the Green Goblin in the next Spider-Man movie, it will look at least half as cool as this fan art.

While some elements from the Raimi Spider-Man movies have probably aged poorly for some fans (like that terrible Goblin suit), Dafoe's performance has not. It's actually hard to imagine anyone else playing the role in live-action, that's how good he is. While Dafoe is an incredibly talented actor, known for his roles in arthouse and indie films, he knows exactly how to play a comic book supervillain. Dafoe portrayed Osborn's descent into madness in a way that would seem ridiculous coming from most actors, but he was able to sell it. Sadly, the character was killed at the end of the first Spider-Man movie, and while he does make brief cameos in the second and third Raimi movies, for a while it seemed like that we wouldn't get to see Dafoe take on this villain again.

However, while it's unconfirmed, it's very likely that the next MCU Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, will be opening up the multiverse. Actor Alfred Molina, who plays Doc Ock in Raimi's Spider-Man 2 basically confirmed that he would be reprising his role, even though he wasn't supposed to reveal that to anyone. This means that the Raimi Spider-Man movies may exist in an alternate universe that can appear in the MCU. There was also a rumor that Dafoe himself was actually spotted on the set of No Way Home.

So, hopefully, we'll get to see Dafoe once again step into the shoes of one of the greatest on-screen comic book villains ever. Until then, you can take a look at this fan art, which depicts what Dafoe might look like in the MCU.

Spider-Man: No Way Home will be in theatres on December 17th, 2021.
